Immortals of Aveum Scratches the First-Person Battlemage Itch

Immortals of Aveum is one of the next games published under the “EA Originals” bucket. It is a first-person magical shooter.

Developers Ascendant Studios just announced that Immortals of Aveum, their upcoming first-person mage shooter, will release on July 20, 2023. The game is a purely FPS title, but has you fling spells instead of fire bullets.

Immortals of Aveum also got a story/gameplay trailer released alongside the announcement. It claims to be the first AAA game to make use of Unreal Engine 5.1. From the looks of the trailer, that claim is quite warranted.

Immortals in my Aveum

The titular land of Aveum is where the story of the game takes place. An unfriendly conflict called the “Everwar” has been going on for… well, forever. This eternal conflict has shaped the world in its bloody wake, ravaging the landscape. In fact, the millennia of war has created a breach in the land known only as “The Wound”.

Out of the ashes of the original five kingdoms arise two bastions of strength. We have the Lucium to the North and the Rasharn situated in the Southeast.

Our hero Jak (without Daxter) is part of Lucium, and has been conditioned to fight as a powerful mage. He is inducted into what is called the “Order of the Immortals” which is like Lucium’s very own Special Forces with fireballs and lightning.

Their enemy, the kingdom of Rasharn looks to be trying to take over the entire world of Aveum, despite the damage it may do. This thus kicks off the story of Immortals of Aveum.

Magic: the Gathering

Immortals of Aveum will have the player become an ultimate force of destruction on the battlefield. Instead of traditional and puny weaponry such as guns and swords, this game will have you fling spell after spell at dozens of enemies at a time.

It looks like players will have to keep thinking on their toes as the game is extremely fast-paced and action-packed. Jak will need to learn and master over 25 of the game’s spells. There will be 80 Talents to specifically fine-tune his abilities depending on your play style.

Skillful and creative players that seamlessly weave all of the game’s elements will be graded based on combat performance. Systems like Devil May CryForspoken, and Flintlock: the Siege of Dawn come to mind.

Immortals of Aveum Color-Coded

Magic in Immortals of Aveum is split into three distinct schools, or simply, three colors.

Red Magic represents violence (as expected). Spells in this school have the most potential harm, rend, destroy, and disrupt your enemies.

Blue Magic will be a force to be reckoned with – quite literally. Spells of the Blue alignment will be able to manipulate matter and gravity. You can create shields on demand, or push and pull objects away from and towards you.

Last is the Green Magic, which symbolizes “growth, death, and transition”. Most of the magic in this category will alter enemies or even the environment. You can ensnare your targets in place, create illusionary annoyances, or even heal wounds.

Immortals Unreal

The game is also touting itself to be one of the first major titles to be released using Unreal Engine 5.1. As such, it is making use of various engine-specific technologies such as Lumen for lighting, Nanite for enhanced model fidelity, World Partitions for a seamless level design, and Metahumans for the uncannily accurate human cast of characters.

As a result of this technological leap, it has been confirmed that the game will only release on current-gen consoles and PC. There are no plans to backport Immortals of Aveum to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

The game is also confirmed to be purely single-player and will have no form of online play. It will also have no microtransactions and does not have any plans to release post-launch DLC.

Aveum’s Avenue

Immortals of Aveum will be released on July 20, 2023. It is being developed by Ascendant Studios, and published under the EA Originals license (just like Wild Hearts). Its Standard Edition will retail for $59.99, while the Digital Deluxe Edition will go for $69.99.

Pre-purchasing Immortals of Aveum now will give players access to a Sigil (basically a weapon to channel magic) that enhances his Blue Magic. The Deluxe Edition will include the “Triarch’s Wrath” Sigil that can fire off all three colors of magic. You also get more Rings and other trinkets, but it doesn’t immediately seem like an impressive deal for an additional $10.
