The team at Hoyoverse took the time this weekend to give us a small tour around its newest region, Sumeru. While we do not currently know when Travelers will be able to set foot on this new landscape, we can assume it will be quite soon.

We recently got to take a look at the new, incoming Dendro Characters as well as the new Dendro abilities and reactions. Spoiler: they all look really good, and are a perfect fit for this upcoming update. Environmental artists Jax Huang and Maizi give us a closer look at what we can expect to explore next in Teyvat.

Genshin Impact’s Sumeru Region

Huang explains that Sumeru will be vastly different from all of the existing locations in Genshin Impact. Compared to the likes of Mondstadt, Liyue, and Inazuma, Sumeru will be a bit wilder.

Welcome to Sumeru

Welcome to Sumeru

Sumeru is split up into two distinct biomes, specifically a rainforest and a desert. Hoyoverse is trying its best to make Sumeru’s locations unique, yet familiar at the same time. They are taking their time to create a careful balance “between exoticism, fantasy, and realism.” The Sumeru region is thus perfect for diverse art styles with its two very different sub-regions.

The Forests of Sumeru

Sumeru’s humid forests will be visually and thematically distinct from the treelines of Mondstadt. It will have endless mountains, and gigantic towering trees all around. This, together with softer rock formations will make it look different from what we’re used to seeing in Genshin Impact.

Glowing Plants

Glowing Plants

Even the forest itself will have a lot of variation. Due to its tropical, humid nature, it will feel like a jungle at times. Some parts of the forest will have larger trees that extend towards the heavens, collecting rainwater all year round. Others will be decrepit, having warped trees instead of healthy ones. Even further leaning into fantasy, some locations have gigantic, glowing plants that perch on top of other plants.

Definitely, the Rainforest’s highlight would be the region’s central city. Sumeru City is housed within a massive, ancient tree. It perfectly blends both nature and progress into a neat little package. Deep in the forest is also the final resting place of a giant robot of unknown origin, wasting away in the wilderness.

Magical Things and Childlike Wonder

Magical Things and Childlike Wonder

Spirits blessed by the region’s Dendro Archon also roam the land, and can only be seen by children. This gives the impression that childlike wonder is still alive and well in this lush rainforest.

Players will be able to assist these spirits (who presumably communicate through the kids) with secrets that the forest needs help with. Who knows, maybe helping these woodland creatures will give players hits on unknown wealth and bountiful secrets?

The Arid Deserts of Genshin Impact

Looking towards the west of Sumeru City is the arid desert area, ever looming over the horizon. Its brown exterior is a stark contrast to the jungle’s lush greenery and magical vibrance. Instead of trees, spirits, and jungles, the desert is filled with sandstorms, oases, and sacred ruins.

These sacred ruins are also many in number, ripe for exploration and plunder by anyone who would dare attempt it. Some of these ruins are still active with magical power. The most powerful of which seem to be attracting powerful inverted sandstorms all around them.

Genshin Impact Forgotten Temple

Like the forest, deep within the desert is also an old robot, forgotten by time. What his relation is to his forest brother is anyone’s guess at this point.

Genshin Impact Patch 3.0

Patch 3.0 is shaping to be quite a huge update for fans of the ever-popular Gatcha game. We just got Patch 2.8, and are excited as well for the next 2.9 update. At the moment we do not know when this new region and the new Dendro elements will be playable. Hopefully, we get to see more this August!
