We’ve rounded up some games that you can grab for free across different platforms including Playstation, Xbox Series and PC this January 2023.
Free Games for January 2023 and Other Niceties
Everyone loves free games, right? Last year’s Death Stranding Epic Games freebie was one of the more prominent releases that crushed the storefront’s servers in its first few hours.
Now that the holidays are (mostly) over, we get back to our regularly scheduled programming. Today, we take a look at the free games and new stuff to look forward to with our favorite gaming subscription services.
PlayStation Plus Free Games
Starting over at team blue, Sony is giving out its regular two Free Games this January, plus a bonus extra. All Essential and above PlayStation Plus subscribers will be getting the following:

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, is a third-person action-adventure soulslike set in the sci-fi universe. Developed by Respawn Entertainment, this unexpected hit was released back in the tail end of 2019. The game mixed the action setpieces that are known in games such as the Uncharted series with a light offering of soulslike combat. It was also able to create a great Metroidvania-light exploration experience where players had to revisit older planets once they unlocked new powers.

Fallout 76, a game that quite frankly needs no introduction, is also being offered for free to all Essential subscribers. This title was basically Fallout 4 but with dozens of players in the world at any given time. The game’s initial launch was received with mixed feelings from both the media and fans, but shaped up quite nicely lately. It is even better as now it is one of the Free Games this January 2023.

Last on our plate for the PlayStation Free Games is Axiom Verge 2. This 2D Metroidvania Platformer is the sequel to the 2015 game. While still loosely connected to the first game, the sequel introduced a new world, new enemies, characters, and abilities. This is one worth checking out, as the original title was still able to hold up 6 years later.
Xbox GamePass and Games with Gold
To those that may have missed it, Microsoft’s Games with Gold is still up and kicking, despite losing much luster when compared to its younger sibling, Xbox Game Pass. Nevertheless, the console service still gives out free games. For the entire month of January, subscribers can claim Iris Fall and Autonauts.

But when talking about the Xbox ecosystem, there’s no comparison to the GamePass Service. While technically not full of Free Games, GamePass still encompasses a wide library of rotating titles and services.
Don’t Pass on the GamePass
Quite recently (December 20), most, if not all, of Riot’s games were added to the service. Valorant, League of Legends, Teamfight Tactics, League of Legends: Wild Rift, and Legends of Runeterra are all part of a GamePass subscription now. Hold on, aren’t those games already free-to-play, you may ask. Well, connecting your Riot account to a GamePass-enabled Microsoft account will grant players tons of perks such as unlocking all champions/agents, giving you day-one access to new heroes, and even XP boosts to make grinding a tad bit easier.

Coming in January for Xbox GamePass though are some heavy hitters. As confirmed back in October, Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden are heading to the service on January 19th. Persona 5 Royal is already on the service, so fans and newcomers to the game will have tons of content to go through.

Last for GamePass games in January is Monster Hunter Rise. This title will also appear on the PlayStation consoles around the same time, and both will be getting visual enhancements. Resolutions of up to 4k 60 fps, or 1080p 120 fps will be available to the current-gen consoles. Monster Hunter Rise‘s console and GamePass release will be set to version 10, which should put all the hunters on an even playing field. Don’t forget to drop by our Monster Hunte Rise wiki for all the latest armor, weapons, info and more.
Epic Games Free Games 2023 Kickoff
Last, but not least, is the PC-centric game store that keeps on giving Free Games on a regular. As of writing until January 13th, players can pick up Kerbal Space Program and Shadow Tactics – Aiko’s Choice for free.

Between January 13 and 20th though, players will be able to put on their Sherlock Holmes caps and become budding detectives.
Gamedec is a futuristic dystopian CRPG that has players solve crimes in virtual worlds. The top-down perspective and writing are the key highlights of this title. It is also heavily choice-based and allows detectives to approach problems in different ways. Be sure to check out our overview of the isometric game.

First Class Trouble is the second of the free games and is a social deduction party game. It pits players against a deadly AI that is trying to kill them. However, things are not so simple as mixed among the human players are impostors, robotic slaves that are in cahoots with the dastardly intelligence.
A Free-for-All
