The following is an excerpt of a blog article.  Read Full Article

Netflix has revealed that they are developing and producing a new show based on the Witcher series of novels by Andrzej Sapowski. The TV show will be based on the books soley and not on the games with Sapkowski serving as creative consultant on the show. There is not clarification on which specific stories the series will follow but the show's executive producers are Sean Daniel and Jason Brown from the acclaimed sci-fi show The Expanse. Tomas Baginski, who directed the intro videos for the Witcher games and the Cyberpunk 2077 teaser will direct at least one episode per season. The show will ...

I wonder what they'll do with it.

That is definitely not something I expected to happen. Don't know whether to be excited or concerned. I mean, I guess, logically, if the books hold up on their own as a story, then maybe the recent success of Game of Thrones might've made some producers more amenable to the idea?

I haven't read the Witcher books yet. How does the story structure go, does it just follow the main character(s) or does it jump perspectives over a large group of people like GoT does? If the former, I'm not expecting it to have much staying power as a TV series.

Encounters with every single flavor of ice cream having sex with each other. Plus a dance number with Geralt singing about "his sex junk...his oh oh oh..." and something about Gerard Depardieu(?).

I see watched that Bill Nye thing too. I just saw a review on it. It was not pleasant.

@TSMP The stories in the Last Wish were a collection of short stories, that were each a self contained story about Geralt's encounter with some type of creature he was tasked with hunting down, with a larger narrative that was woven through. If it plays the same way on TV, I would imagine it having an X-Files type setup, with each episode being a creature feature in addition to a larger story that ties them all together. If that's the case, this could be a lot of fun.

My biggest concern is the gratuitous use of sex. When reading the books it's frankly distracting from what are otherwise exceptional folklore tales. There's nothing wrong with sex but just like violence if it's all about that one element, any good storytelling is just not going to be taken as seriously as it deserves. That's been my biggest critique of the Witcher in general, is that it tries on one hand to be a thoughtful exploration of culture and myth and on the other a Conan the Barbarian pulpy kill-monster-bed-woman. You can't really do both at once. Either can be done well and one can have elements of the other but they can't exist in equal parts.

lord of the rings taught us that fantasy violence works. game of thrones taught us that sex can be added. will the witcher show us that this formula can work in bite size chunks as well as in the traditional epic format?

So, sexy fantasy X-files, only without Mulder. I can see that being a thing.

Have to disagree with you on the Conan bit, though. I've read the original comics, they're really not like that.

By Conan I meant the movies, not the comics, that's the only experience I have with the franchise.
