I mean, he tells you he want to become elden lord, singular. It was obvious you'd have to find him at some point

to the guy above me well in the boss fight SPOILER : he says a tarnished cannot become elden lord not once not ever and feels it in his bones or something. Unless he ain't tarnished and the game opening cinematic was fake thatd be very weird

Bigger spoiler:
Right after he rants about how tarnished can't become Elden Lord you meet Godrick, first Elden Lord and it turns out he's really Horah Loux, Warrior Chieftain of the Badlands - another Tarnished from the intro.
Turns out Gideon doesn't know much.

He only used one when I fought him. I beat him first try so I don't know if I just burnt him to hard for him to heal again...

I didnt even get to see his attacks other than some sort of skull spell. Killed him in 1 skill combo (Waterfowl Dance with 2 follow-ups).

Incredibly weak to inescapable frenzy incantation. Takes over half his health if you land it

...Wait a minute, he gives us all this spiel about "earning our place at the Roundtable" when he doesn't even have a Great Rune himself! The hypocrisy just dawned on me, hah. As if simply living there for long enough makes him more worthy of Lordship.

True, though it's worth balancing that with the perspective that this dude HAS been around for a long *** time and has built up a very impressive intel network, amassed a very impressive awareness of the world in its state of chaos, and managed to survive where absolute units like Radahn have been so reduced.
His drive, or the 'flame of ambition' as Morgott so aptly infers, is a double edged sword. In order to rise, one must Will-To-Power from a lesser place. He may be levying an objectively unfair standard on us, but it might be seen as simply a byproduct of the heights to which he aspires and holds himself as well, Great Rune or not.
Also, his renown is Gideon, the All Knowing, not Gideon, Conqueror of the Stars or Gideon, Lord of Battle. He's opted for the path of knowledge as our equals in pursuit of the Elden Throne. It is made pretty explicitly clear that the Demigods are locked in stagnant struggles at the highest level of contention, which the Tarnished have been observed echoing in a microscale, fighting over scraps until now. Throwing yourself into that may be comparable to someone perceiving the game testing field and deciding to throw themselves at the field to become the highest paid game tester, completely ignorant that they had more choices than just the field as it was first presented to them. Gideon isn't particularly interested in just doing what everyone else, doubtless just as if not more skilled than he, has BEEN trying to do without any success whatsoever. His strategy is even vindicated when his critical info and efforts assembling/maintaining the Round Table lead to us breaking the mold. In that sense, he gambled and lost that he could bottle the lightning that was us just like Nashandra in DS2. Perhaps hubris, but also perhaps it was his 'best shot'/well-considered best moment with the odds as far in his favor as he could manage.
I think you're right - just wanted to add a bit more to perhaps balance out the character as I see him. =)

He doesn't WANT to be a Lord. He wants tarnished to fight over being a Lord-- forever.
