Not sure of the specifics, but as I recall in West Limgrave the times that I summoned this spirit (no upgrades) enemies that got hit 2-3 times would get poisoned. Mostly I used them because they're slowish to move, so I can pretty much plant them as an aggro-drawing turret. The fact that the spirit also inflicted poison was a nice extra effect, but wasn't ever the reason I summoned it. I suppose if your character also uses poisons a lot it would be more significant since both of you would be contributing to poison gauges.
