I like to lay down a poison mist so the other player can't see my character in PVP, then I throw these until I hear them clank on a shield.

it depends on the enemy, every enemy has a different amount of resistance to different things (including poison). Look up different enemies on this wiki to see how much poison resistance each one has

Its great to kill the Burrowing Rockworm in the demon ruins before the bonfire, need less than 10!
