You won't get loot if he fell. Totally dumb tho. Fighting face to face a dude with a giant hummer that pancakes you for about 800-900 a hit is ridiculous without backstabs. Almost every backstab means he has to learn how to fly. IE no LOOT. I got the shield once on NG +5. It is not good at all. 2 HP a tick means nothing.

Lead him down the tunnel with the crystal lizard and he won’t need to learn to fly.

Depends on how tight of a spot that youre in. I always like to keep at least one health regen equip in my inventory.
