Avelyn has higher damage and no intelligence/faith requirements. On the other hand, if you are running a dark/pyro build or any build that gives you decent int and faith, the Sanctum Repeating Crossbow may be better due to innate dark scaling (only Sanctum [Repeating] Crossbow has any scaling at all out of all crossbows)

You can buy most arrows and bolts. Except bleed ones.

For melee builds these are a lifesaver (no need to waste points into magic for ranged attacks).

My advice is, pick a crossbow that you like in the early-mid game, then upgrade it all the way to +10. Yes, its worth it because you'll be using it the whole game. My favourite is Heavy Crossbow as you can get it with free +3 in Earthen Peak. The machine gun crossbows are best but they are only found late game so they are useless unless you go for NG+.
