Do you have the required INT to cast it? And do you have the catalyst in your LEFT hand and your weapon in your RIGHT hand, some weapons cannot be buffed as well.

Speaking as a dumb melee guy, this is a great question and a great answer. Thanks!

At 10 INT with a Sorcerers Catalyst you apply 87 damage to your main hand weapon, surpassing Charcoal Pine Resin.

Similar for players who used to grab Carthus Rogue on Dark Souls III who want that extra buff with minimal stat investment.

Use it with the Oolacile Catalyst (the one with 10 int requirement) and it will add 144 magic damage, almost the same as a gold pine resin ;)

Does Crown of Dust / Dragon Ring buff the damage?

This is not true. I just tested using magic weapon with Dusk Crown, Bellowing Dragoncrest Ring and both equipped and it does the SAME damage as having them both unequipped. The damage of weapon buff spells cannot be increased by any means. It is a static amount. The Lingering Dragoncrest Ring does increase the duration from 60 seconds to 90 seconds though.

I should clarify it can't be increased by any means other than changing your catalyst/increasing your INT so that your Magic Adjust goes up.

So recently trying to do a ceastus only run and I’ve witnessed something interesting. I got a +5 fire ceastus to fight O&S because Ornstein is weak to fire, but I did some testing and found out I deal more damage with a +10 standard ceastus and magic weapon, I don’t even have that many levels invested in any of the scaling stats and I’m using ollacile ivory catalyst, I’m intrigued as to how the damage is calculated between ascension and buffs cause by all right the fire ceastus should deal similar damage to the buffed standard ceastus

I’ve been testing the weapon ascensions myself recently. Turns out splitting the AR results in some wacky calculations that significantly reduce the actual damage done. It’s far more effective to stick with standard scaling and apply weapon buffs, because those add to to the overall damage rather than sitting it.

I haven't double checked but I believe ornsteins magic def is worse than his fire def
