I understand that you want to kill each other to decide if this attribute is trash or good. But after all, what minimum do I have to increase it being meele dex?

AGL is bad, not ADP

Some mechanics are optional, blocking for instance is not strictly required —it's just a low risk low reward alternative to dodging.Dodging however, is not an optional mechanic —as many attacks can't be blocked and couldn't otherwise be avoided (certain boss attacks especially). While gating an optional mechanic behind stats is fine —stronger shields require more strength, gating an essential mechanic behind stats is legitimately brain damaged design. If you want to beat the game you will have to invest in agility and thus adp, so if what they wanted was a sense of character progression why not just tie agility to player level instead of a stat that the player has to go out of their way to spec into?

Since respecs are possible I can at least salvage my character, but if it wasn't for the wikis I and many players probably wouldn't have realized why exactly their dodges suck.

Adaptability is not only for agility characters and shields are not only for strength characters but I do agree that this attribute is lacking in the usefulness department (artificial usefulness is not the same).

21 Apr 2023: every character is an agility character, because everyone needs to dodge; are you getting agility and Dex confused?

Dodging IS optional, in DS2. You can strafe around enemies

the stat is also tied to how fast you can chug your estus, which is also not something that should be optional to lvl up since estus is the most essential item in the whole game, and slowchugging will most likely get you killed in lots of situations

to be fair, thats totaly optinal to lvl that stat and have more iframes. I did almost all my runs (including no death runs) without leveling this stat or knowing that the stat increase iFrames.

I know this stat is...controversial. As a melee player (probably with more of a strength focus), how high should I take it? I've beaten DS 1, 3 and ER for reference.

I would recommend around 20, but since you can respec in DS2 you can get a feel for it on your own.

i suggest checking the page for agility. ds3 and ER have 13 iframes on fast and medium roll and 11 for fat. ds1 has 13 for fast, 11 for medium and 9 for fat. ds1 fast roll w/ dark grain wood ring is 15. use these numbers if you want a consistent feeling to whatever game you'd prefer. agility page will tell you exactly how much pf it you need

40 is probably good while keeping points decent in other stats

You want to get to 105, which you can get with 30 ADP + 10 ATT, though if you don't care about a spell prep slot then you could just go for 32 ADP. Going to 110 is largely pointless, because you won't get any additional benefit until 111, which requires 48 ADP, so an extra ~18 levels just for 1 extra i-frame definitely isn't worth it IMO, but to each their own.

Imagine being a simpleton who parrots other people’s opinions on a stat sucking, but doesn’t know why people say it sucks is because it’s the best stat in the game.

The MAIN problem with ADP is that the animation for rolling doesn't actually change when you increase ADP, so if your character actually LOOKED like he was rolling like a * with low ADP, then nobody would have a problem with ADP. The way it appears to work is that... your rolls simply don't work with low ADP, and that's why everybody hates it, and why everybody who hates that it's this way is absolutely justified in hating it for being this way.

100% true. i played ER, BB, DeS, DS1 before DS2 and noticed this fighting the pursuer in FotFG. Id dodge his attacks in what would normally be perfect "souls" timing and still get knocked back with 75% of my health gone

Absolutely, the game feels great with high ADP, much more like the other games...but the game simple doesn't work correctly with low ADP and then high ADP...it appears to the player that it still doesn't work correctly due to no animation change. It took me literally like four attempted playthroughs to even think to look up ADP and what it does. A merciful, quick patch to remove ADP or make it scale faster perhaps would go a HUGE way to allowing more people to enjoy themselves some DS2 (apart from the DLCs...those will still be trash for the most part...cause snowfield).
