Am i the only one thinking this whip is a reference to castlevania?

Perhaps it is the untold story of what happened to Indiana Jone’s whip during Raiders of the Lost Ark

Well, it's an rpg game set in the middle ages that has tons of weapons. It's natural any game like that eventually included a whip (see Secret of Mana for example). Not gonna say it's not a good item for cosplaying Simon Belmont, we just don't know the truth. I have my doubts tho, considering the whip in the original game sucked a lot and I doubt they purporselly wanted to make a weak representation of the VK

So what constitutes armor in this sense? Like, heavy armor only, or any armor at all?

Example: I killed 4-5 lion warriors then needed repair...I killed one stone and one iron golem in Drangleic castle and needed repair

Nobody outside the official team knows the answer of that, so who knows?

Definitely a Castlevania reference. I made a Simon Belmont build based on this one weapon. I feel like they made it harder to acquire this weapon in SotFS. I had multiple copies for all the different characters I made in the original 360 version. Now I can't get one to save my life. 5 Demon greathammers, 3 channeled tridents, dozens of petrified dragon bones but not a single Old Whip... Either the RNG gods hate me or it doesn't exist in the SotFS version of the game... ::sigh::

It does, It's just the RNG. You're probably going to hate me but I had the exact opposite experience: I traded 4 Petrified Something for upgrade material... And got 4 old whip. No Joke.

Funny thing, I NEVER managed to get a single one in the original DS2. I bought SoTFS recently, started off with a petrified something, and first thing I get is the whip.

On the other hand I wanted a Channeler's Trident... Instead I have so far got 2 Demon Hammers and 3 Old Whips

I heavily agree this is a Castlevania reference, just finished binge-watching all 4 seasons of the show and the second I heard Trevor Belmont say his whip was blessed for killing monsters in season 1 I immediately thought of this item.
also, fun fact, The morning star in terraria is a direct reference to Castlevania.
oh and uhh, yeah the RNGods hate you for certain, I traded all the Pertified somethings I could find in-game with no cheating whatsoever and every time I got the Old Whip in return, I actually believed for awhile that the Old Whip was the only thing you could get in return for the Petrified Something.

This whip hits really hard, but due to how quickly it loses durability you'd have to carry around about 3 fully upgraded to get any use out of it

Loses durability quickly against heavy armored, repair spell helps

carry a spear for armored opponents and the whip for unarmored

I love how some weapons are like references to castlevania like red rust sword being a reference to red rust in sotn and the old whip being a reference to the vampire killer

Whips are pretty good in ds3 - I kill a bunch of people with the witches locks.

To clarify, one whip in DS3 is good with the right stats. One whip.

I remember deciding to use Ariendel's Rose as an offensive tool... It actually worked pretty well as a spamming stunlock. And it bleeds anyone stupid enough to try and trade with you repeatedly. Even doubles as a catalyst!... Alas, it doesn't do well against intelligent opponents. But do note, if you use lightning stake in someones face they are hit by both the spell AND the rose. Its actually kinda meh, which is amazing in whip terms!

Whips are way better in DS3. You can't rely 100% on them, but their area control and denial is amazing. PvE wise, whips are very strong, specially in a team. In PvP, you can mix them with pyromancies or hexes. Keep them afar with the whip and punish them with fast spells if they try to roll towards you.
Their damage is not the best, surely, but they are way more reliable in DS3, and easier to master.
Just as a fun fact, whips can even hit through walls to absurd ranges, and through corners extremely reliably in DS3.

Better in DS3 than DS1, sure, but still a downgrade from DS2.
But Witch's Locks are the only whip you should really be using imo, and as pointed out, it's with spells to complement them that they really shine. All fun in PvP, but short of spamming the weapon art and rolling attacks and taking advantage of long disjointed hitboxes, I think they're pretty damned unreliable/unsatisfying in PvE. But one of my mains is actually a pyromancer with only the Locks, and it's definitely fun for PvP.

It's super good against them dex builds lol, usually no heavy weapons so they won't go for heavy armor, you can smack their butts easy.
