"Earned his renown for decimating enemy ranks with his Two-handed fighting style while clad in head to two in impenetrably heavy armor" that's most melee builds in a nutshell for this game
It's a nod to Guts from the Berserk manga.
Actually the earliest chance at an Alchemist is in the Watching Woods Sanctuary, if you decide to join the Stone Roots when you first get there.
Or you can get one of those items that converts a sanctuary to your creed and just convert that sanctuary to whatever your religion is.
They leech at a rate of 0.5 per hit no matter the weapon.
lol..

Guts would be proud.
Players are able to transmute this greatsword quite early in the game but are unable to upgrade it because the upgrading materials are all found later around the 2nd half of the game... lol
You can actually get it to IV pretty easily. Upgrade the Kureimoa to III (which is super easy because there's a soldier's poem before Mad Alchemist), transmogrify it to Shrouded Bulwark II, then farm the 4 Saltless in Village of Smiles for Drowned Lockets and you'll have a Shrouded Bulwark IV; before the second boss if you're patient enough. Upgrades after that will be more scarce, but that should be more than enough to carry you most of the game.
This weapon is strong enough in the begging of the game.
I suggest you skip this weapon all together and go for the chitin obelisk. It starts with a little worse damage but makes up for it with better scaling. As well as that you can get the chitin obelisk at the same time as you can get this weapon, AND it has easier upgrade materials. (You get the mite chitin from the secret next to the nomad)

Honestly, it's a fantastic weapon if you decide to go with some of the Buff incantation since, to my understanding, scale off of base damage, not overall damage. Meaning that if you buff it, it's AR is increased much more dramatically than other weapons if you go that route. Not to mention the MP leech can be quite useful to counteract the stamina degradation that comes naturally from fighting in the game as a whole. However the Chitin Obelisk is definitely a good alternative if you want more scaling damage for the long haul. I think it's up to the matter of preference, and the look of the build you're after.
37.5% Slash damage, 62.5% Strike damage, 100% Badassery.

(This is mainly a Strike weapon, just like the Chitin Obelisk)
If you are running a build which buffs weapon via Arcane Weapon or Divine Blessed Weapon, this sword is great (much better than Chitin Obelisk, and most of the other greatswords). This is because its base damage is much higher, so the spell will add much more damage, and you'll deal much more damage.

I am afraid that is not the best greatsword in the greatsword category. Read the info in the wiki.
