This "a lot of damage" probably occurs when you counter attack with probably Lion's ring on and have to perform 2hr2 attack so that it would hit enemy with both sword attack and launching "magic" attack.

The laser is two-handed only. If you have anything in your other hand it becomes a regular overhead strike.

What damage type does the projectile use? And is buffing with dark better than dark infusion even for a hexer?

The projectile is based on your physical damage, so infusing it with an element lowers the damage of the projectile. Buffing doesn't affect the ranged damage

Hundreds of hours in both vanilla and SoftS, and I still haven't gotten this weapon (and consistently forget that it exists). I MUST acquire this sword at some point.

Well even so, I too have spent hundreds of hours and have never gotten this or used a drake keeper weapon. Or the spitfire spear, lost sinner sword, or iron king hammer. I always figured they weren't very good, but I have been proven wrong before.
