Does anyone have any idea where this area is in relation to Yharnam? I know how to get there and everything but I am curious as to where it is in the world. It seemed you can see the Nightmare of Mensis from this area but no Yharnam. The only other landmark I really noticed was the tall tower or lighthouse shrouded by the mist in the Nightmare of Mensis. It seems odd since the rest of the game is quite well linked.

Most likely another dimension made by great one influenced by nightmares that or great one see that as a normal home the masts below could be caused by someones fear of a ship wreck creatures by fear of beast or possibly the great ones experimenting to create surrogates for their lost children and failing keeping them around for security or not wanting to kill them for not living up to their expectations and letting them roem free heck the boss amygdala may have taken in the one other great ones tried to destroy because they saw them as failures or left to dye and the nightmare could just be a preserve

It isn't really anywhere in Yharnham I believe, it's a nightmare and you get there through a 'fog gate' in the Lecture Building which is 'adrift in the nightmare' (or something like that, it says somewhere.
So the real question is the nightmare a physical place or just that, a nightmare.
But god knows how you walk into a nightmare through some purple smoke, but then again you go into a dream by crouching at a lamp so..

""To be honest I'm not sure how your hunter keeps coming back to life after death or why this doesn't seem to be the same for the rogue hunters."" - I heard this other hunter say somthing along the line "fearing this is my last death" or something to that affect.

It's because the other hunters no longer "dream", they aren't tied to the Hunter's Dream, therefore when they die, they die forever... where as you the protagonist are tied in essence to the dream after your blood transfusion you will continue to traverse the hunt for as long as you are still a use to the nightmare of the Hunter's Dream. Fun note, whenever you enter a place and gain insight, it means that area is not in the real world but in another plane of existence (hence gaining insight, like cainhurst castle etc.) Huzzah for Madness! (insight).

Thanks, this was a very interesting article. If I hadn't played the game beforehand though I would have thought the lecture building was the hub like the firelink shrine. Central Yharnam also makes me laugh a bit since it's actually at the edge of the map though geographically it probably is in the centre of the city. Sadly, I find the map highlights how small the world is. Obviously this is a 2D map so it doesn't show the stacked areas like the Mansion in the N.O.M. but even despite that the world feels small. In reality, it seems there are only really 11 areas (10 if we exclude Byrgenwerth) that are of any relative size. The two workshops, moonside lake and upper cathedral ward just feel so small in comparison. Oh well, I would always choose quality over quantity after playing Dark Souls II.

Yeah, it does seem rather strange that. To be honest I'm not sure how your hunter keeps coming back to life after death or why this doesn't seem to be the same for the rogue hunters. I guess it being a nightmare separate from Yharnam would also explain why the moon is white in the Nightmare of Mensis but sadly not for Byrgenwerth. I do find it kind of a shame that the whole world isn't connected in its entirety but then again it's not really much of a problem and I've heard some theories that say the whole game is just a nightmare (which really gets on my nerves to be honest since it makes the whole thing feel like it was all for naught - Perhaps that was Miyazaki's intent?). Thanks for the reply!

In Yarnham at the big gate that takes you to the nightmare (if you have that special item). Before this happend I dropped a lot of coins because I knew something fishy was going on. By my surprise the coin shows up at a bridge right before you kill the first enemy when enter the cave. The bridge is.. it's hard to explain in proper English. My coins ended up on a bridge there anyway. Strange game

Who hates PvP and goes offline every time they go here and the Nightmare of Mensis? The few times I forget and am invaded I have won 70% of the time and still hate it.

You're not alone. It doesn't help that the invaders are much higher leveled and have multiple 10+ spam able weapons. If I'm too lazy to go offline I suicide run for the bell maiden.

Greetings, Nerd! Quick question: in your ideal world, would those who happen to know less than you in this one, obscure, meaningless field be burned at the stake, or would they simply not exist, leaving you and your gang of know-it-all buddies to stand amongst one another, arms crossed, smugly contented in your mutual knowing of everything? Followup question: About how much sex is this condescending nerd routine angling for you? All of it? I thought so. You stud, you.

Does anybody know why the leeches (squids) have messengers within them? They show when it uses the rapid poison cloud. Thought it was interesting, but there's no info on them.

I have no idea why they are inside them, it's probably related to the nightmare somehow. The brain trust's brains are also composed of messengers, and you even find the messengers gift tool in this level. Maybe the messengers are embodiments of the minds of past hunters who sustain the nightmare?
I planned to add a screen to the wiki eventually and you reminded me to do so now

The doll says they inhabit the dream they had to have come from somewhere I think hunters made the dream and the nightmare was made millennia ago by the great ones probably amygdala if it was any one of them or it happened naturally either way the magical energy of the place brought life/the great ones did it heck three umbilical cord bits and you get an baby great one plus they can have kids with humans they want surro gets so maybe messenger who can move around outside of the dream and find possible mates or to guide hunters to become their kids the messengers may have even been attempts to make new infent great ones opinions

Oh God you're right, i never noticed that the brain trusts are composed of messengers. Perhaps the messengers are those who made contact with eldritch wisdom, and the "grander purpose, for posterity" as described by Madman's knowledge could be serving Hunters who do not go mad from the same knowledge that was their undoing? Those little guys are mysterious haha. Thanks for the reply

So... when i open up the shortcut. I stood at the very edge of the rock/pillar and when it fells onto the ground, I clipped through it and fell off the map. After about 2minutes of falling and finally died, I respawn in the hunter's dream instead.

Has anyone noticed if you look into the 'fog' below the nightmare, especially when overlooking Amygdalas chamber you can see what look like to be ship masts sticking out? Some have 'sails' or 'flags' attached, wtf are they there for? are they even masts at all?
- Tue Jul 05, 2016 4:53 am
#15833585
you can find the same masts at the coast in fishing hamlet in the dlc. so maybe this area lies below nightmare frontier?

I think the whole nightmare realm is one huge area as mergo's loft can also be seen from the nighmare frontier
