“Our vision for this exciting new IP is to deliver a game world and hero that gamers across the world will want to experience for years to come, so getting it right is extremely important to us.”
Aside from Forspoken, Square Enix is also set to release multiple games this year. We had Babylon’s Fall release earlier this March (which also had a Nier Automata crossover). Also this March, Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin will get released on the 18th.
What’s this about Forspoken?
For those unaware, Forspoken is the debut game by Luminous Productions, a subsidiary of Square Enix. This company revealed that it has been working on the title back in June of 2020 which was revealed as Project Athia as its working title. Later it was officially named Forspoken.

Forspoken follows the footsteps of Frey Holland, a disgruntled New Yorker who is unhappy with her life. She is then mysteriously teleported from her home into the land of Athia. It’s like Earth, but not exactly, as suggested by her magical talking armband.
Her newfound ally, which she calls “Cuff” allows her to use powerful spells, travel at intense speeds, jump, and fight various types of enemies. She must now search for a way home after being thrust into an unknown world. Hopefully, she survives to see another day in New York.
The Land of Athia
Athia is described as being both beautiful and dangerous. It is a land that is mixed with different environments, from sprawling deserts to mountainous regions, to ruined cities. It also looks as if it has a lot of Roman inspirations with its architecture and populace.
The place is also filled with many fantastical creatures and inhabitants. One of the earliest snippets revealed to us is the existence of dragons, which Frey looks to eventually try and face off against.

Athia was once even more breathtaking and prosperous until the calamity only known as The Break. The benevolent leaders called the Tantas, along with all their lands and followers were corrupted.
Of Might, Magic and Parkour
Jumping and Tumbling
With the help of Cuff, Frey has access to some fantastical powers and abilities that one would only dream of obtaining. Right off the bat, she gains the ability to traverse the land extremely quickly with the help of super speed as well as acrobatic parkour movements. The movement looks like an Assassin’s Creed game dialled up to 11, with a mix of Infamous and Prototype.

She can run, jump, scale walls, dash through the air and grapple onto things. The visual effects that accompany her traversal are just as meaty. Distorted golden lines flash throughout the air in Frey’s wake, and give off an intense feeling of magic, weight and impact. It definitely looks like parkour will be a major part of the game, and I like what I see.
Fantastic Spells and Where to Find Them
Spells on the offensive side look just as stunning as Frey’s movement abilities. She will have access to a wide arsenal of magical spells that can do more than just damage her enemies.

Frey has access to a water spell that will fully engulf her enemies. In the gameplay trailer, we can see that she uses it to drown some hawk enemies while they’re flying in the air. Who would’ve thought drowning above water was even possible?
She also has access to land mines that create chain explosions whenever her opponents get too close. Frey can even use simple hand gestures to create magical bolts of energy that zap around the battlefield. Alternatively, she can charge this up to create a piercing force of pure energy directed at her foes.
It will be very interesting to see how well the mixing of combat and parkour will work together in this game.
Forspoken and the Release Date
Forspoken will be an exclusive on the PS5 and PC for about two years. It is an open-world action game previously called Project Athia. The original May 2022 release date was announced back in December of 2021. It will be released for everyone on October 11, 2022.
