Introducing the Somniel, Fire Emblem Engage‘s home base of operations. Nintendo’s official Youtube channel showed off a lengthy trailer that featured the various important and leisure activities that Alear can do in Somniel.

The footage lasted just under 7 minutes, and it looks like there will be tons of things to do while you’re done fighting things and taking over lands.

Welcome Home, Adventurer

Think of Somniel as Fire Emblem Three House’s Garreg Mach Monastery, but dialed up to 12 in terms of optional tasks. Garreg Mach itself was quite the sight to roam around in, and it felt like there was always something to do or someone to talk to.

Somniel crams so much into the little space given to it, but all of it looks quite interesting. For most players, preparing for battle would be the biggest thing that you would participate in.

Like any good RPG, the Somniel in Fire Emblem Engage is equipped with the best (though basic) merchants and blacksmiths. These trusty traders will always be available in case you need an emergency healing potion or two before heading out into combat. You can also be sure to have some weapon choices for your units with the Blacksmith.

Prepare for Trouble (and Make it Double!)

More unique to Fire Emblem Engage, however, is the Ring Chamber. This is where Alear can manage all things related to the powerful Bond Rings. Specifically, he can inherit various skills from the legends imbued within the rings, meld existing rings together, create new rings entirely, or even polish the rings.

Polish rings, you say? What might that be for? Well, in order to keep a steady and healthy relationship with your Bond Rings, you need to be sure to keep them nice and clean. Players can thus polish their Bond Rings, improving the stored legends’ disposition towards Alear.

Tower of Tribulations

Another mystical area in Fire Emblem Engage’s Somniel is the Arena. This magical door leads to a pocket realm that contains everything you need to simulate real battles without the risk. Alear and friends can thus practice and perfect their tactical strategies before using them on the battlefield.

The other combat-related feature of the Somniel is called the Tower of Trials. This far-off building in a forgotten corner of the grounds holds a building that can have players participate in trials of increasing difficulty.

Players can even design their own Trial maps and then upload them online for other users to attempt. As of writing, it looks like each Nintendo account can have only 1 Trial Map uploaded into the Cloud at any given time.

Networking and Socializing

Just like all good Fire Emblem games, Fire Emblem Engage hosts a huge cast of characters that the player can befriend (or become enemies with). Once you get to know them better, you will start to gain insight into what they like. You can use this information to find nice items that you can gift to these individuals.

Aside from talking to your friends, you can even ask them out for meals at the local Cafe Terrace. Players can customize their meals, from the actual dish to be prepared, the chef to cook, as well as your dining partners.

Depending on the viand, players will be able to gain temporary buffs that should persist through the next battle.

Everything Under the Sun

Don’t think that Fire Emblem Engage’s optional activities end there, traveler! For animal lovers, you have access to your own mini-ranch in the form of the Farmyard. Taking care of your animals is rewarding in of itself, but lucky farmhands might even be given special ingredients to use in the Cafe.

The Boutique and Amiibo Gazeebo contains all of your cosmetic options in Fire Emblem Engage. Players can use their hard-earned money to buy the most bedazzling spectacles or jackets for each of your friends. Make sure to “Slay in Style” as they say.

Wrapping up, you also have the Training Yard to make sure that Alear and their friends are in tip-top physical shape. It looks like you can do hard physical exercise. Perhaps even 100 Pushups, 100 Sit-Ups, 100 Squats, and a 10-kilometer run is in order?

Engaging the Engaged Fire Emblem Engage

Fire Emblem Engage releases exclusively on the Nintendo Switch on January 20, 2023 – about a month away. The standard edition will cost the usual $59.99. A Season Pass has also been announced to add new characters (Bond Rings), and more.
