Final Fantasy 7 Remake Episodic Options

Given the news that the FF7 remake is going to be episodic can have one feeling hesitant or conflicted on the type of game that fans might be receiving. This decision could be great fortune or great folly for the franchise. I have been wondering how Square Enix will plan it all out, there are a few ways I can see this all happening.

One way is making each original disc of the game an episode, this would make the game 3 episodes long, although I think there could be up to 5 or 6 episodes of the main game depending on where Square stops in the story. If Square chooses to chop up the main game then I hope that there are at least references to the compilation. There could still be room for the Compilation games as future episodic DLC or expansions.

Another way could be by including all of the story and games of the FF7 Compilation. This would be a long project and have many releases, if Square really wanted to milk the franchise they would do this. Compilation Final Fantasy VII happened about a decade ago and generated a large amount of revenue for Square Enix. The Compilation of FF7 also provided an expansion on the lore and story of Final Fantasy VII. The remake is a perfect opportunity to blend the entire Compilation of FF7 together into one all expansive game. Given that they are overhauling the battle system if Square Enix develops a system that allows a seamless blending of all the games in the compilation then I’m all for it. This would also be a perfect opportunity to present the events of Advent Children in a game, which would be what a number of fans have been asking for. If all of Compilation FF7 was made part of the FF7 remake then there could be 20+ episodes of material and even years of releases and relevance given the episodic presentation. Square could literally produce content for as long as it was profitable to them.

Which ever way Square chooses to go with the Episodic releases of the FF7 remake, they just need to remember that anything they do flesh out in the game makes sense for what is already presented. The Jenova Project, Ancients, SOLDIER, Deep Ground, Chaos, WEAPONS, and the Lifestream all need to make sense in the game. There is no need to add some cliché concept to make the game popular, the brand recognition is popular enough. With all that the compilation games have added in the story of FF7 I am expecting tons of references to it even if it is not included in the remake. Let’s hope they drop that reference to FFX and FF7 being connected.

I’m hoping if it is broken up by key story points it’s about the same timing as the disc changes of the original game. I would be very disappointed if they had one episode consisting of just getting out of Midgar, Another Cloud’s past, another the Ride to Mideel, ETC.

The most likely scenario is a retelling with extra scenes and dialogue. I’m thinking of something akin to FFT War of Lions. Now obviously what I am hoping for is a massive game that incorporates the entirety of FF7 compilation.

This is what I am hoping for. With the remake of FF7 there is perfect opportunity to drop tie ins of the entire compilation. We could have references and Items from throughout the compilation as fanservice in the remake.

I was also expecting Yuffie and Vincent to have a more active part of the story since they aren’t optional going by how the compilation story unfolded.

.Hack were very fun games to play, I have hope for the remake with their involvement.

I’m thinking we might have even more optional content. maybe a little side story involving Cissnei from the turks. references to Angeal and Genesis as well as deepground.

  2. There’s going to be a lot, LOT more exposition in the remake. Whether it’s for content padding or adding greater clarity is anyone’s guess at this point. But with Kazushige Nojima and Tetsuya Nomura involved I’m not as concerned as I would have been. (No Toriyama is always a bonus.)

I only hope we get a better localisation this time round since the original one is really poor.

Wutai is guaranteed to be mandatory now as both Yuffie and Vincent will both be mandatory party members. Combined with the fact the game WILL be linear (ala Final Fantasy X, I’m guessing?) And considering the cost, it would probably be a waist to do all of that work and then just hide it from the players like before.

I’m very eager to get hands on with the battle system, Nomura always does action systems well, if nothing else.

Another thing people are overlooking is the fact CyberConnect2 are also working on this, they did a proto-Episodic release of .hack back on the PS2 and is probably the reason they were brought in.

  3. I kinda wonder if they’re going to do any of the optional segments from the game. The key side quest I’m thinking of here being the Wutai story, which I think is honestly pretty integral would 100% have been part of the main story had Yuffie not been an optional character

  4. The only thing that’s good about it being released episodically is that there’ll be plenty of time to find out how the game(s) play before purchase. I always wait for the packaged “full” game release of episodic games before I buy, & this one won’t be any different for me.

  5. Personally I’ll just see what % of the game they’re providing at what cost. If it seems like too much, I’ll just wait on the price to drop. Just have to ask yourself how much you’re willing to spend for the instant gratification. $20 per disc’s worth in comparison to the original for roughly a standard MSRP of $60? Are they adding more content or areas to the world?

  6. we’ll see, I’m guessing they will probably release it in 5-10 hour packets. That way they can make each area fleshed out and get a return on the huge amount of money this game will cost to make.

  7. This is an interesting perspective on it. Which do you think is the most likely scenario? I just assumed it would release the game as we know it in a series of chapters based on key points in the story.
