Upcoming indie game Egress mixes Dark Souls and Battle Royale

Following the success of games such as PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, it seems there are no end of developers wanting to create Battle Royale-like games. Egress looks a bit special though, partly as it features Dark Souls-like combat.

Hardcore Dark Souls-like combat in Egress

Developer Fazan has announced their new game, Egress. They say that it is a “role-playing battle royale with an intense hardcore melee combat system” which is similar to Dark Souls. The dark setting mixes the Victorian era with Lovecraftian horror. It features playable heroes who have unique abilities and weapons. The city is also fully-explorable. You can crawl through sewers, hide in houses or take a more scenic route atop the rooftops.

The Souls-like combat is based on ability combos, melee attacks, dodges and takes into account the weaknesses of the characters. You can either go it solo or enter team versus team matches.

Egress is scheduled to be released later this year for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. If you like the look of the game, you may want to sign up for the closed beta test.

Egress’ dark city is fully explorable. Will you swoop down on your enemies from the rooftops or crawl through the sewers instead? I vote for the former.

Hm, interesting. Both the battle royal and souls like categories have dozens of cheap copycats. Hopefully this game does something to set it apart from the rest. Mixing the two categories together is a good first step.

Thanks for this, I cannot wait! I have been playing a lot of DS1 and DS2 PVP, and I just love it. I cannot wait for this game!

I’ve been looking forward to a game like this for a long time! I love the concept of a battle royal game, fighting to the top against so many people in a huge open ‘arena’, but I’m terrible at shooters, so a game that mixes that concept with souls style melee combat, which I like to think I’m pretty good at, is my ideal game. Mix it with a steampunk aesthetic and victorian industrial setting, and you get a game I’m pretty sure I’ve actually had a dream about playing before.
