Capcom shows off their main attraction for this TGS 2023 Dragon’s Dogma 2 with a closer look at gameplay featuring four start vocations.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 Shows Off Magic, Monsters & More at TGS 2023
We’ve been anticipating more Dragon’s Dogma 2 since it was announced back in 2022. The sequel to the open-world Action-RPG already gave a peek into what’s in store for players including the open world being four times the size of the first DD. But now at Tokyo Game Show 2023 there’s a whole 9-minute deep dive into the game. Introduced by Game Director Hideaki Itsuno.

Rise Arisen – Starting Vocations
As you’d expected, the Pawn system returns in Dragon’s Dogma 2 with three AI characters to run amok with you. Players will have four starting Vocations or classes to choose from which are Fighter, Archer, Mage and Thief. Of course, you can later use advanced classes such as the Magick Archer to truly put some power behind your bow. You can also change up your class as you wish by stopping by one of the guilds.

- Fighter utilises a one-handed sword and shield using melee damage with a shield for protection
- Archer can use long-ranged attacks with a third-person-shooter aiming system
- Mage has the power to cast spells using incantations. More powerful spells will need longer incantations
- Thief which gets up to close to monsters and uses quick attacks with a dagger
The Thief looks more fluid in Dragon’s Dogma 2, with quick spinning dagger attacks not only on the ground but in the air. Slicing and dicing a big ogre is no problem with the Thief’s agility.
AI has gotten an upgrade since the first game, being far more reactive to player combat. The narrator actually says “using your wits against you”. This could mean we’re in for some intense battles.
A World of Two Nations
Two nations were also confirmed to be in the game, Vermund the human kingdom and Battahl which is the land of the beastren. Vermund seems to be on the up, ruling the kingdom after defeating a dragon. It’s lush and green with plenty of exploration.
While Battahl is more barren, with a “rugged canyon” as the city based upon ancient ruins. Battahl is also overrun with monsters, providing a much more volatile experience compared to the human kingdom.

But beasts and monsters aren’t the only run-ins you’ll have. Characters will occasionally pop up and call out to you. This can put you on a side quest or become a guide to the location. Of course you can always ignore them if you don’t want to take up a new mission.
New Features
Pawns and Travel By Oxcart
Pawns can come to your rescue when you’re in trouble. We see the main character fall from the grasp of a giant bird, only to be caught by a Pawn. The world seems much more alive in Dragon’s Dogma 2. You can even hitch a ride on an Oxcart. If you’re tired of walking, simply close your weary eyes to fast-travel to the destination. But if you choose just to ride along there’s also a chance to be attacked by monsters, it’s up to you how you react.

Camping
The world has a day and night system, so time is always passing, this is similar to the original game which also has a Day and Night Cycle. This makes for a very immersive experience, as the night will be completely dark and far more dangerous than travelling in the day as there are monsters that only come out at night.

Sometimes it may be useful to just pitch a tent and Camp for the night using a Camping Kit. Here you can interact with your Pawn companions.

New Advanced Class – Mystic Spearhand
But a new advanced class was shown called the Mystic Spearhand. This spear wielder has imbued magic for long-range and double-ended pointy Weapon to jab at enemies. Both magic and physical attacks can be used with this advanced class. Magic can be used to block enemies from making their move or to throw a number of things at once.

Magick Archer – Wide AOE Attack
Also shown was the Magick Archer which also has gotten some changes. One major attack can cast over a wide area which draws from their own maximum HP. This seems like a kiss and curse ability but could be useful in a tight spot.

Overall the gameplay looks really good, some awesome new features. While I was hoping they’d announce mounts to travel around in the open world, there seems to be some further ways to get around.
