While it was only until recently that the indie RPG Undertale held the top spot by displacing Dragon Quest XI down to fourth place, it is still latching on quite close from second place.
Dragon Quest still holds four of the top five places which demonstrates the adoration of the franchise in Japan.
For a niche oriented Nippon Ichi title, Yomawari: Midnight Shadows makes a strong debut in the top 10. Megadimension Neptunia VIIR’ placing in 12th place, hints at the fact of the scarcity of PlayStation VR headset on the shelves in Japan.
On the Japanese magazine Weekly Famitsu digital sales, Dragon Quest XI sold 113,182 copies on PS4 in its first two days on the shelves (from July 29th to July 30th), while only 62,939 copies were sold digitally on the 3DS.
In combination with Famitsu’s numbers, this brings the debut of the two versions in Japan almost equal with each other, with the 3DS version selling a combined digital and retail sales at 1,193,407 copies while the PS4 version at 1,063,520 copies.
This explains the strong initial sales reported by Square Enix for the PS4 when you also factor in the PS4 launch being only in Asian in the meantime.
