Dolmen is an upcoming action Soulslike RPG that features cosmic horror elements. The game is rumoured to launch on May 20, 2022 according to recent listings.

Dolmen is a Cosmic Horror Soulslike Action-RPG, Rumored to Release on May 20, 2022

The developers at Massive Work Studio have been working on a sci-fi Action-RPG they are calling Dolmen. The game follows in the steps of games such as Dark Souls and The Surge in the sense that combat is slower and methodological. Patience and learning enemy tactics is paramount to victory.

Dolmen currently has no formal release date, however the recent listings on both the PlayStation and Xbox stores mention that Dolmen is releasing on May 20, 2022. This date is currently not on the Steam Store but still listed for “2022”. The game can be pre-ordered on all three platforms as of writing. Pre-ordering the game will grant backers access to the “Rebel” set. This package includes a full Rebel Armour set, the Rebel Sword, and a Rebel Axe. It is a very stylish garb that is bright white with blue luminescence all around. The armour is set to be created by a race of genetically engineered humans called the “Xenospecies”. It is durable and intended to help humans cope with the harsh conditions of space exploration.

In Space, Nobody Can Hear You Scream

Dolmen is set in a mining station on an ancient planet called Revion Prime. An interdimensional rift opened up, and thus installation has been overrun by hideous creatures. Was the opening of the portal caused by an accident, or an attack?

Players are then tasked with retrieving crystals with unique properties. These crystals are called the “Dolmen”. They are being sought after as the crystals are able to distort the lines between reality, and can make space exploration even easier than before.

The world of Revion Prime is dark, yet beautiful. Traces of ancient civilizations and the remnants of the mining station are all scattered around. “What happened to everyone?” will be on everyone’s minds. Revion Prime definitely has more secrets than it is letting on.

Dungeons & Dolmens

As mentioned, Dolmen is a Soulslike Action-RPG set in space. It can somewhat be compared to The Surge and The Surge 2 in terms of being sci-fi, but that’s the only thing that seems to be in common. Instead of facing off against humanoid enemies in mech suits, your primary opponents in the Dolmen seems to be ferocious aliens. These creatures range from insectoids to rhinos and everything in between. There are even some more horror-themed monsters and evil-looking space aliens lurking about.

Combat is slower and requires more patience to be able to succeed. Dolmen touts dynamic combat that makes you stronger after each successful encounter. Knowing when to attack, advance, retreat or play defensively will be key much like every other Soulslike game.

Weapons and Armaments

Players will have access to both melee and ranged combat options. You can make use of your basic rifles, axes, swords but will have access to more futuristic weapons such as energy blades, chainswords, and organic weapons. Speaking of which, players will be able to craft new weapons and items from the bodies of their fallen enemies. They will have to adapt and change their playstyles depending on the encounter.

There will also be a lot of armour sets to choose from, each with an entirely different look and feel.

Lastly, players will have to make use of “Energy Mode”. This feature not only allows players to use ranged weapons but also allows them to imbue their melee hits with elemental attacks. You can select the element best suited against your current foe to be able to exploit its weaknesses.

Timeline Erased

Dolmen is looking to be a unique entry into the Soulslike genre. In the ending of the trailer, the player character looks like they took a fatal blow. Afterwards, the words “Timeline Erased” graced the screen. The game’s feature page doesn’t mention anything specific about the meaning of this message. Maybe the game has some Roguelike elements, similar to Returnal?
