Divinity: Original Sin 2 Character Creation & Stats Developer Update

Larian Studios, developer of Divinity: Original Sin and Divinity: Original Sin 2 has posted a development update on their (very successful) Kickstarter page. This particular update opens a window into character creation as well as stats.

Acknowledging that there are some players who prefer quick entry into the game’s events and others who prefer a detailed character creation process, Larian has implemented a creation engine that aims to appeal to both types of players.

Character Customization

Here are the options for character customization:

  • Origin Stories: There will be several pre-made origin stories to choose from. This will result in encountering people who know your past and adds an extra narrative layer to the story.
  • Tags: Tags cover your background, your profession, your race, your gender, and how you interact with the world. These add extra depth to your character and let you make something unique to extend off the origin stories.
  • Musical Instruments: There will now be personalized music for your character! Choose an instrument at character creation, and at certain points in the game, your character’s them will play on your chosen instrument! Every hero needs their own theme music.
  • Race: Beyond human, players can now play as a lizard, elf, dwarf or an undead warrior.
  • Appearance: Players will have more choices to customize their looks.
  • Gender: Your chosen gender will affect how the world will interact with you. Depending on the culture of people you meet, you may find yourself received very differently based on your gender.
  • Skills: You can choose from a set of skills in a pre-made class, or now design your own class!

Attributes

Additionally there has been some reworking of the game’s attributes. Here are the stats being presently tweaked for the game:

  • Memory: Memory is a new stat and is necessary to memorize skills and only a limited amount of skills can be memorized at any one time. More powerful skills also require a higher level of memory.
  • Strength: Strength improves use of melee weapons and makes it easier to wear heavy armor, and improves warfare skills.
  • Finesse: Finesse benefits those who use bows, crossbows and daggers and improves hunting abilities, rogue abilities and gives a chance to dodge.
  • Intelligence: Intelligence is for mages and improves the power of staffs, wands and most elemental skills.
  • Constitution: Constitution is useful for vitality. Which is always a good thing.
  • Wits: Wits increase critical chance, help to reveal secrets and traps and allow you to get out of delicate social situations as well as determines initiative and persuasion.

They also dug into some of the secondary attributes that will constitue a player build especially the defenses:

  • Physical Armor: Protects from physical damage. One Physical Armor point absorbs one point of physical damage. As long as Physical Armor is above zero, physical statuses like Knocked Down, Crippled, and Bleeding will not take effect and it automatically regenerates out of combat.
  • Magic Armor: Protects from elemental damage such as that from fire, water, air, earth or poison. One Magic Armor point absorbs one point of elemental damage. Elemental resistances apply before armor protection is applied. As long as Magic Armor is above zero, magical statuses like Stun or Burning will not take effect and it automatically regenerates out of combat.
  • Memory Slots: Memory Slots determine the number and quality of skills you can use at the same time. You can learn every skill in the game, but only a limited amount can be active at any given time. Outside of combat, characters can organize their active skills to prepare for their next encounter. The more powerful the skill is, the more Memory Slots required.

I think it’s reasonable to presume they will, but we’ll ask at Gamescom for sure.

  2. Well that’s pretty interesting. Nice to see they are doing a old school RPG, that’s an actual RPG.

Do they plan on bringing it to consoles?

  3. Great stuff. It all sounds very promising, I can’t wait to see what they show us at gamescom
