Diablo 2 Resurrected Trading Guide: Runes as Currency

Gold is not used for trading or setting the price of Items in Diablo 2 Resurrected, and Runes are used instead. The reason for this is that gold is very easy to find, and it’s only useful for Gambling at merchants which is not that helpful. Runes, on the other hand, are very hard to come by and are used to create Runewords, which are some of the most sought after items in the game.

When creating a Runeword, its modifiers will usually depend on a roll, and the final price of the item will depend on the roll that you get. Players will be after perfectly rolled Runewords, which are very hard to get and require many crafting attempts. This creates a money sink where players use Runes for both trading, and for rolling new Runewords in an attempt to create a perfectly rolled version of a Runeword.

It’s important to note that while Runes are used as currency, only Runes of a certain level, like the Pul Rune (Lvl 45) and above, are actually used for trading. This, however, doesn’t mean that the level of the Rune determines its price, as this is determined by how useful the Rune is, as well as supply and demand.

Multiple Runes of the same type can be combined using the Horadric Cube to create a single Rune of a higher level, but this cannot be done the other way around, meaning that you can’t downgrade Runes to an inferior level. Low level Runes will usually require 3 of the same Rune, while higher level Runes will only require 2.

For example, you can combine 3 Lem Runes (Lvl 43) plus a Flawed Emerald into a Pul Rune (lvl 45) or you combine 2 Gul Runes (Lvl 53) plus a Ruby into a Vex Rune (Lvl 55).

Players will usually talk about HR, or High Runes, when setting the price of late game items. High Runes are comprised from the Ist Rune (Lvl 51) up to the Zod Rune (Lvl 69), but some lower level Runes comprised from Lem (Lvl 43) up to Mal (Lvl 49) are also used for lower tier trading.

The price of Runes constantly varies, but here is a table that you can use as a rough estimate of the value of each High Rune. Since Ist is the first High Level rune, I’ll set its value as reference.

You can convert these values to the Rune that you currently have to make a trade. So, for example, if you have a 2 Ohm, which is roughly 5 or 6 Ist, you can trade them for 1 Lo Rune, which costs 10 to 12 Ist.

While playing Diablo 2 Resurrected you’ll encounter a massive amount Equipment during your runs. And as a new player, it might be difficult to determine an item’s value and whether it’s worth keeping or not, which usually leads into hoarding a lot of items that you never sell, because you are uncertain of their value. To avoid this, you should consider the item’s rarity, usefulness and roll value to determine if it’s worth keeping or not.

Unique Items, Set Items and Runewords

Unique Items, Set Items and Runewords have fixed modifiers, and they only differ on their roll values. For this reason, they usually have standardized prices that only vary depending on certain rolls. There are a couple of different ways to check the current price of one of these items:

1. You can check the Rune and Item Values page on our Wiki for a rough reference of item prices. Use the search function to filter by name, type, rarity, value or any other keyword.
2. You can ask in the chat for the value of the item. Make sure to ask more than one person to get a better estimate.
3. You can join a trade game and see how much other people are asking for the item that you currently have.

It’s important to note that only important modifiers are considered to determine if an item is a “perfect roll”. Let’s use the Spirit Runeword on a shield as an example. Three different modifiers are subject to a roll when creating one, which are:

1. Faster Cast Rate: 25% – 35%,
2. Mana: 89 – 112
3. Magic Absorb: 3 – 8

In this particular case, the most important roll is Faster Cast Rate, and a Spirit Shield with 35% FCR is considered a perfect roll, without taking into consideration either Mana or Magic Absorb. Mana is still important, but it won’t have a big impact on the Spirit Shield Price as long as it has 35% Faster Cast Rate. Any roll below 35% on FCR is no longer considered perfect, and even if it has 112 mana and 8 Magic Absorb it will be worth the same as a 89 mana and 3 Magic absorb one.

Remember to always check the important rolls of your items before selling them, as perfect rolled ones can be worth multiple times their price. In the case of the Spirit Shield, a normal roll can be worth around 0.5 ~ 1 Ist while a perfect rolled one is worth around 2 ~ 4 Ist.

Rare, Magic and General Modifiers

Rare and Magic Items are more difficult to value because, in most cases, they don’t have fixed prices.  This is because certain modifiers can be good for a Class, a Build or very good in general. The more uses an item has, the higher number of people that will be interested, thus increasing its price.

For example, a Small Charm that provides +Life is useful for all classes and all types of builds making it a very valuable item. On the other hand, a Small Charm with +Max Damage is only useful for melee builds, which is still valuable, but has a much lower demand, and thus a lower price. Another example is a Grand Charm that provides +1 Paladin Defensive Auras vs another charm that provides +1 Paladin Combat Skills. While both provide +1 to a Paladin Tree, the Combat Skills one is much more expensive because most Paladin Builds are made around the Combat Tree.

Having considered this, you should first look at the item modifiers and determine whether the item can be useful for every class, a particular class or a particular build. Here is a list with some general modifiers that some of the most valuable items have:

Runeword Bases

Another type of Item that you might want to keep for trading is Runeword Bases. Players are constantly searching for bases for their Runewords, and they usually overpay when they need to craft something. A 4 socket Monarch Shield is a great example, as it can be used to create the Spirit Runeword.

If trading is not your thing, or if you just want to keep things simple, then a good alternative is to only stick with the most popular items and getting rid of everything else. There are items that are constantly in demand, making them very easy to trade and to identify their value. Here is a link to our wiki, with a list of the most commonly trade items and their value.

Another good alternative to trading is sticking with basic currency items such as Gems, Jewels, Uber Keys, Essences or lower tier Runes.

Currency

• Perfect Gems: Perfect Gems are used in many Horadric Cube crafting recipes making them very valuable. You can usually trade 40 perfect gems of any type for an Ist. Rubies, Amethysts and Skulls are more valuable, and you can trade 20 of the same type for an Ist.
• Jewels (Magic and Rare): Similar to Gems, Jewels are used for crafting, and a set of 40 jewels is usually worth an Ist
• Lower Level Runes: The following Runes are also used for crafting, and a stack of 20 of the same type can usually be traded for an Ist: Ral – Sol – Amn – Nef – Tal

Uber Items & Essences

Uber Keys are constantly in demand and can be sold either individually or as a set. In order to create a set you’ll need 3 of each key for a total of 9 keys.

• Key of Hate: 0.5x Pul
• Key of Terror: 0.5x Pul
• Key of Destruction: 1x Pul ~ Um
• Key Set: 1x Ist

Essences can be used to create the Token of Absolution to respect your character:

• Burning Essence of Terror: 0.5x Pul
• Festering Essence of Destruction: 0.5x Pul
• Charged Essence of Hatred: 0.5x Pul
• Twisted Essence of Suffering: 0.5x Pul
• Token of Absolution: 1x Um

Diablo 2 Resurrected Trading Guide| Ladder Trading & Making Profits

While playing the Ladder, item prices will highly depend on the current time of the season. Knowing how this works can make you lot of profit, as long as you know what you are doing.

At the start of each Ladder, players will mostly focus on getting basic items to start farming and almost no one is doing PVP. However, during the middle stage of the Ladder less people are farming and more people are focusing on PVP.

For this reason, things like Shako, War Travelers or Viper Magi might be worth a lot during the start of the season, and be almost worthless after a couple of weeks. You can take advantage of this and ask for a high level Rune in exchange for those items. High Runes hold little value during the start of the season, so players will be willing to trade them to quickly get their characters going. Once the initial rush is over, those high Runes will be much more valuable, making you a huge profit in the process.

Another great way of making money in the Ladder is by farming a specific type of content such as Uber Keys or Tokens of Absolution. These items are always in demand, so you can stock up on them without having to worry that they’ll depreciate in value.

There are two main ways to trade with other people: one is by talking to them in the chat channel, and the second one is to join a game and trade there. Trade channels are filled with players and they’ll usually drop items in the trade window for you to check, if there’s anything you like just ask the price.

Since wording space is limited, players often use acronyms in both chat and game names.

For example, a player that wants to buy a Stone of Jordan and is currently paying 1 Vex rune will usually write: “WTB SOJ 1 VEX”. Another example might be a user that wants to trade 2 Mal runes for 1 Ist rune might create a game called “WTT 2MAL 4 1IST”

Here are some references that you can use to better understand what a player is actually saying:

Chat Commands

Another important aspect to Diablo 2 Resurrected communication are chat commands. These can be executed by writing down / and the command that you want to execute. The most relevant for trading are (without “):

• “/w accountname message”: This will send a private message to the account and the player will receive it no matter what character he is playing
• “/w charactername message”: This will send a private message to a specific character. If the user is playing a different character he won’t receive the message
• “/r message”: this will reply a message to the last player that sent you a message
• “SHIFT + Left Click on Item”: This must be done while the chat is open and will send a highlighted message that players can mouse over and click to display the exact values of an item.
• “/whois charactername” or “/whois accountname”: This will tell you the player’s battlenet account name, as well as the name of the character that he is currently playing and its level
• “/ignore player”: This will block private messages from a particular player
• “up an down arrow keys”: Allow you to scroll through previous messages.

How to complete a trade

So, let’s suppose that someone is offering a Stone of Jordan for 1 Vex Rune and you are interested. Whisper to that player and tell him that you’ll create a game called, for example, “SOJ1” so he can join to complete the trade.

Go ahead and create the game, making sure that the difficulty setting is normal and that level difference is not active. This is important as the player might be using a secondary character with lower level. Wait until the player joins, then click on top of him and wait until he accepts your trade request.

Once he accepts, a new window will appear displaying the trade screen on the left and your inventory on the right. Drag the items that you’ll be trading from your inventory to the trading screen, (in this case a Vex Rune) and wait for him to do the same in his own trade window. Make sure to mouse over the items that he is offering (a Stone of Jordan in this case) before completing the trade. If everything is fine click on the check button on the bottom of the screen and wait for the other player to do the same. If he accepts, the window will close and the items that you traded for will appear in your inventory.

While this seems very easy, there are many ways that scammers use to trick you into a bad deal. The most common one is swapping the item for a different one that looks exactly the same. For example he might swap the Stone of Jordan for a magical ring that has the same design. The game will block the trade for a couple of seconds whenever an item is swapped, but always make sure to check the item before pressing the check button.

The second most common trick scammers use is placing the same item but with a different value. For example, you might want to buy a Spirit Shield with 35% FCR and then he swaps it for another Spirit Shield that has 25% FCR. If you are not paying attention, you might get tricked and lose a lot of money.

Notes & Tips

While perfectly rolled items are great for end game builds, they are not that important when you are starting off. If you happen to come across a 35% Spirit Shield it might be in your best interest to sell it and buy 4 different things rather than having a single powerful one.

Additional slots of shared stash were introduced with Diablo 2 Resurrected but you might still run out of space very quick. A great option is creating what’s generally called a “mule”. This is a Lvl 1 character that is only used for its inventory space. Just create a new character, and take items from the shared stash into it’s individual stash or inventory for additional space.

If you demand a “high price” for an item it may not sell for a long time, taking space in your stash, and rendering you unable to use that space to keep trading more items. Try to settle for fair prices and your economy will become more fluid.

Don’t be afraid to barter with other players. Most people will start off with a high price and then go lower. Make an offer, and then wait and see how much the other player is willing to go down to make a deal.

Value your time even more than you value your items. Waiting hours for a perfect trade will only result in frustration, and you could probably make even more money by just playing for that same amount of time.
