If you can’t get enough of the Destiny 2 beta, you’re in luck because Bungie has extended the beta for another 2 days. The beta will now end Tuesday, July 25th 9PM PST.
Destiny 2 Beta Extended
The Destiny 2 beta began last week, July 18th for pre-orders and was to run until the end of the 23rd. If you haven’t had a chance to play it, the beta is open to anyone on PS4 and Xbox One through the digital stores and contains the following:
- Homecoming: The opening mission and cinematics from Destiny 2’s Campaign.
- Countdown: Enter the Crucible to battle other Guardians in a brand new mode. Attack or Defend the base on a new map custom-built to support this new game type.
- Control: The original standard for Crucible combat is back, with some impactful changes. Control the zones on another new map built with this objective in mind.
- The Inverted Spire: Strike at the heart of a Vex stronghold. Bring two willing allies, or let Matchmaking introduce you to a Fireteam of Guardians.
- New Subclasses: The new fighting style for each Class will be at the ready. Choose from the Dawnblade Warlock, Arcstrider Hunter, or Sentinel Titan.
- The Homecoming story mission is open to all players, while the Crucible and Strike will require a subscription to PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live Gold, depending on your platform.
Now you’ve got 2 more days to see what the hype is all about and can spend some extra time trying out the new subclasses and weapons. We have a full rundown of how the Hunter, Titan and Warlock have changed and for your gun nuts, you can consult our guide on how to earn every exotic and legendary weapon and armor in the beta. You can also check out our gameplay impressions piece to see what we think of the new game so far.
Destiny 2 releases September 6th for the PS4 and Xbox One and on October 24th for the PC. PC players are getting a beta later next month. Thoughts on the beta so far? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

For me it fails in the same way that the first game ultimately did (so far). They original hype came across as a more open world MMORPG where the focus was on guns rather than swords and magic. And the first area delivered on that somewhat well in the first game. Then it turned out areas were a lot smaller than hoped for, and the MMO like areas with free reign got repetitive really quickly.
Enemy AI was mediocre and easily exploitable. Tactics generally revolve around “get the best gun you can” and “run in real fast and start shootin’.”
Which is not to say this is a terrible thing. Most shooters, particularly those with a PvP focus, trend this way in my experience.
This is really more to say it might not be for me in the long run. As a more methodical shooter (loved Call of Juarez: Gunslinger), it’s rare to find a team that suits me so most of the online stuff I’m a huge liability.
The beta seems to carry a lot of this over, with large but mostly linear PvE areas and a focus on run and gun.
What I was and still am hoping for is that elusive MMO shooter. Because the first game I really did enjoy the hell out of at first. Some of the larger areas with randoms darting in and out of combat was great until the lack of size became a problem. Helping out an underlevel group with a sniper rifle, randomly teaming up to take out that one crazy strong enemy in the cave, turning a dark corner and spotting the light of another guardian…these were all truly great moments for me.
