Demon’s Souls Servers To Shut Down In 2018 [UPDATE]

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced today that FromSoftware’s highly-praised 2009 action-RPG, Demon’s Souls,  will soon have its servers brought down.

Demon’s Souls – Server Closure

[Update]

Following SIE’s server closure announcement for Demon’s Souls  in Japan, publishers Atlus and Bandai Namco have announced that servers for both North American and European regions will also come to a close on February 28, 2018.

With the staff at Atlus sharing their heartfelt farewells in a blog post describing their fondest memories and frustrations with Demon’s Souls.

It’s worth noting that the game can still be played offline, but with just the absence of its online services, meaning no more tense and exciting invasions, deceptive and helpful messages and bloodstains littered throughout the levels.

And for those without the Monk’s Head Collar in their inventories, now is a really good opportunity to obtain it as you only have up until early next year to do so.

The online component for the game that kicked off the Souls  franchise, will come to an end on February 28, 2018 at 17:00 JST in Japan.

Once the service ends, players will no longer have access to these features:

  • Online Multiplayer (Co-Op & Invasions)
  • Writing & Reading Player Messages
  • Other Players’ Bloodstains (Replaying a player’s last moments)
  • Roaming Phantoms
  • Browsing the Leaderboard Rankings

And as for servers in North America and Europe, there has been no word from either Atlus or Bandai Namco, who published Demon’s Souls  for their respective regions.

Demon’s Souls  is now available, exclusively on the PlayStation 3.

  1. I have been wondering for a while why, despite the fact that Demon’s Souls is published by Sony, and that it would be an obvious driver for subscriptions to the PS Now service, Sony has never added them. Yes there are more popular PS3 games, but in terms of games that would actually drive people to subscribe? Red Dead Redemption might have been in that league, but Sony added it almost a year ago.

Perhaps it comes down to this server issue. I don’t know how Sony has dealt with other PS Now games and server EOL issues, but it could be something they didn’t want to deal with (either by having it dead on PS Now too, or doing it in-house). It makes more sense than the other 3 explanations I can think of, namely that they don’t want to compete with a future PS4 “remaster” (unlikely given DS2 is on PS Now), that there’s something strange with their contract with From that prevents it, or that Sony is simply being stupid.

Age of Empires II has gotten multiple DLC campaigns with new civilizations, and the game came out in 1999, though it did come after an “HD” re-release.

I think this is exactly why Bloodborne was so great. It gave a semblance of that feeling of the first time I played a Souls game, as there was mystery and wonder. If you ask anyone what their favorite games of all time are, I can pretty much guarantee that at least one game on the list is unique to them and what was going on with their life and the circumstances that made the experience.

A remaster would inevitably bring what your describing. You can bring back the game itself, all polished and shiny, but you can’t bring back the days of playing something so uniquely fresh and exciting with a bunch of other players who at the time, were mostly just enjoying the experience itself, and not so caught up and obssessed with how the game should be played by everyone else.

  4. I have always loved playing all the souls games, but do you really think someone can emulate the Demon’s Souls server?I mean, that’d be great, but it seems impossible to me.Good day to you all.

  5. I’m a little bit afraid about a possible PS4 release anyway….and this is why….
On PS3 Demon’s Souls has always been (in my opinion) a good game for PVP….i mean, no cheaters, no crazy backstabber, no trollers….it was simply honorable PVP
I remember those day where you could do PVP for hours on 4-1 and it was really funny….
My fear is that a PS4 version could bring all those bad players that we always meet in the Souls games and that could ruin a beautiful game such as Demon’s Souls….
Anyway…..invading the game as the Old Monk was absolutely the funniest thing you could do, mostly when new players couldn’t figure out what the hell was happening with that Boss :00011:

  6. We can only hope.

The days of friendly players dropping Pure Bladestones and also, getting the Monk’s Head Collar, at all, will be officially dead in just a few months. Not that online activity was too terribly active the past few years anyway but the possibilities, no matter how small, of such things happening, or other things, like, say, Scraping Spear trolling, will be absolutely no more.

Just the idea that it will be gone for good feels wrong. Someone should figure out how to get servers running on the emulated version of the game, because the chances of the official server code and such being made publicly available are next to zero. That or a PS4 version to take its place. That would be nice indeed. Just, SOMEONE DO SOMETHING GEEZ

  7. Hope to see the old good Demon’s Souls on PS4 some day…..maybe with the sixth Archstone available :00014:
