Decay of Logos is an upcoming high fantasy adventure RPG for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC, that will release in the fall of this year. It will immediately remind players of something like Zelda: Breath of the Wild, with its cell shaded like art style, that not many games feature. This intriguing title is brought to life by Amplify Creations, and for an indie studio to be able to put out a game which appears to be AAA quality is no small feat. That this is Amplify Creations first title makes it all the more ambitious. It’s being published by Rising Star Games.

Story & Setting
The game is set in an enormous high-fantasy world – Logos – where the player coexists with kings, knights, wizards and ancient mythical creatures. You journey through an ancient kingdom which is ruled by a warlike King. The King isn’t a very affectionate father, and he prefers to focus on the military affairs of his realm, rather than show love to any of his five sons.
Tragedy strikes when the Queen dies during childbirth. Now widowed, the King favors his daughter, which reminds him so much of his departed wife. This causes the relationship between the King and his sons to become even more fraught, and he seeks to protect his newborn daughter, the only Princess in the Realm, from his estranged sons.
Over time the sons’ relationship with their sister grows even more strained, as they blame her for their mother’s death. When tragedy strikes once more the family is irrevocably torn apart, as the Realm is divided between the five sons, in what is known as the Divide.
The game’s story starts with one of the King’s sons destroying our hero’s home village, which prompts her to set off on a quest for vengeance and retribution. Along the way she will discover more about the King and his sons, and learn that things are not always as they appear to be…
Decay of Logos takes place in a vast interconnected world, and while it’s not quite “open-world”, exploration will form a key part of the game. There’s a lot to discover, from Ancient Ruins to the Windmill Valley, and it’s all in a fantastically done art style. Much like Skyrim, you’ll be temped to wander around without any set goals. However, you’ll be given some focus thanks to quest markers that help direct you where you need to go. Progression is in the style of most RPGs – upgrading your weapons and armor to improve the general effectiveness of your character. In terms of what weaponry is available, so far a sword and shield combo and a bow have been seen. There also appear to be slots for Magic.
Keeping in line with modern RPGs (and Dark Souls), combat will be extremely challenging. As the kingdom is corrupted by a dark spell, you’ll have to face off against the Dark Princes of the realm in brutal boss battles.
Wielding your chosen weapon, you’ll string together combos, while trying to avoid being spanked in return, by dodging or parrying at the right moment. Amplify Creations admits that Decay of Logos is heavily inspired by Dark Souls, so if you love that style of combat then you should be at home here. They game is still in its demo stages, but you can already see some similarities, even if they are a bit rough around the edges.
The game’s main villains are the dryads, who are lead by giants and aided by other fantastical creatures of nature. This means your opponents should be a pretty varied bunch, which should keep combat interesting and exciting, and may appeal to those who enjoy games like Dark and Light.
A final note about the gameplay. One thing that makes this game stand out from a lot of semi open-world titles is the elk companion. It’ll be both your friend and steed, and plays a larger role in the game than you would think, by aiding you in many of the game’s quests. The developers are very proud of the elk gameplay mechanics, saying that they’re some of the most fun in Decay of Logos. The elk is mountable and you’ll use it to overcome some of the world’s challenges, so it’s not simply a steed you can only ride.
Audio & Visual
Visually, Decay of Logos reminds me of the recent Zelda games (especially Breath of the Wild and Skyward Sword). They’re beautiful games, so such a comparison isn’t made lightly. In terms of the audio, there will be a grand, epic score – so just what you’d expect really with this kind of a traditional fantasy adventure. Your character grunts and groans convincingly during combat and strikes ring out accordingly as metal strikes against metal when blows are parried.
As mentioned earlier, Decay of Logos is due out on Playstation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and PC (via Steam) around Q3 this year. It’s nearing the “Alpha” stages, and it already looks like a game to put on your calendar (App).
