Dark Souls 3 Early Info Recap

Thanks to a recent in-store Japanese event as well as some savory stream footage from From Software, the recently released opening cinematic trailer and some of our own translations from Fexelea, Dark Souls 3 is starting to take early shape. Players are starting to get a sense of where the third entry in the franchise is going, and as we are compiling everything into one resource on the Dark Souls 3 Wiki, we wanted to take the time to recap some of the highlights.

Even though all that has been presented is only a small part of the eventual game, it is already quite a bit to go on without including the discussions on Stats and mechanics that are so integral to the Souls experience. A lot of the items and spells are content we have seen through the earlier iterations which is expected but we can anticipate some difference in how they behave in game, and there is a fair bit of new named gear which is certain of offer some unique gameplay choices. Tab through the sections below to see what we know so far and keep checking back with us as we continue to bring you everything related to Dark Souls 3!

Obvious spoilers follow so be warned and beware!

Weapons

Bits and pieces of information have been coming in on specific weapons that will be included in Dark Souls 3 as well as some visuals and discussion on the Skills or weapon arts we’ll see for each class. Here’s a list of some of the weapons we’ve seen glimpses of in these early play tests:

If there was a concern that the game was going to lack weapon variety, early indications are that it’s going to have an ample arsenal to choose from, as this list omits even the weapons that were playable during the network test. Some old names, some new names, and some surprising names in there.

Skills

In addition to the Skills or weapon arts we already knew, we’ve been privy to some newer ones, whose names are a translation and as such subject to change:

Check out the translated video showing the Quick Step skill (be sure to click the CC button to read the translation):

Equipment

Shields, armor and rings are important supportive and aesthetic choices and we’ve caught wind of several. Some notables are:

As with the weapons, we’ve got some familiar names and some brand new ones to look forward to.

Spells

Of course we can’t have Dark Souls without magic, and there have been a few spotted notably some Pyromancies and Miracles. They are:

Most of these are familiar to Souls vets, now it remains to be seen just how they will behave in practice.

Bosses

Other than some unnamed hollows we’ve gotten glimpses of some of the larger boss characters we may end up facing in the game, and thanks to the opening cinematic trailer we were introduced to 3 Lords of Cinder.

In addition to the previously mentioned Iudex Gundyr and other encounters from the network test, we can expect the game to be full of the majestic boss fights we’ve grown accustomed to.

Lore

As expected the game’s lore will be presented through a mix of item descriptions some of which can be found on the individual item and weapon pages on the wiki as well as the opening trailer and in game dialogue from NPCs. Check out the opening trailer now and keep scrolling for a transcription of the narrative:

Yes indeed it is called Lothric,
Where the transitory lands of the Lords of Cinder converge.
In venturing north the pilgrims discover the truth of the old words.
The fire fades and the lords go without thrones.
When the link of fire is threatened the bell tolls,
Unearthing the old Lords of Cinder from their graves:
Aldrich Saint of the Deep
Farron’s Undead Legion the Abyss Watchers
and the reclusive lord of the profaned capital,
Yhorm the Giant
Only in truth the lords will abandon their thrones
and the unkindled will rise
Nameless accursed undead,
Unfit even to be cinder.
And so it is,
That ash seeketh embers.

Here are a few item lore transcripts to get your imagination going:

Unique sword from an Eastern Land. Sharp due to high craftmanship

A sorcery of Archbishop Loyce and his bishops, said to be taught by McDaniel of the Frigid Valley

The land of the ancient Firelink Lore, Twin Spear of the Doran Knights, claiming to be those descendants

The Doran Knights wandered lands as mercenaries. They do not carry shields, are are reknown for their offensive prowess.

That there is enough to keep the lore archivists up for hours attempting to decipher the code.

No? You must be mistaken, they said they’d removed the ultra class because katanas are better.

  2. I hope we get some nice cleric robes back like the priest set in ds2. I want to see more nice looking white robes, not everyone likes to dress like a moody edgelord teenager in souls games…

  3. Thanks a lot!

Now lets just hope that the Great Scythe will be back to its Dark Souls glory and not that terrible DS2 version…
