Dark Souls 3 DLC Revealed: Ashes of Ariandel on October 25th, Trailer, Screenshots, and More

Bandai Namco today revealed Ashes of Ariandel, the first DLC for Dark Souls 3, is coming on October 25th, confirming leaked rumors of the expansion’s title and date. The expansion will be available for PS4, Xbox One and PC and is included with the 25 USD Season Pass, or will have a standalone cost of 15 USD.

The new content takes players to the frozen land of Ariandel where they will face new foes with new weapons, armor, and magic as they uncover the mystery of what destroyed the land. Check out the trailer above.

Players will find themselves steeped in a brand new environment filled with terrifying new enemies, challenges, and exciting lore to expand the overarching Dark Souls 3 storyline.

Ashes of Ariandel Details

Famitsu has published some detailed information of the game, as follows:

  • “In this installment, we will tell the story of a world where cold snow continuously falls. Guided by a mysterious person, who will the wandering players meet and fight in this world, and does “Ahes of Ariandel” hold a meaning?”
  • The circle that symbolizes the Way of White becomes a new miracle to tear at enemies. That circlet, almost like a boomerang, returns to its caster after being thrown. For those who learn its uses, it will surely provide a unique style.”
  • “An unstable rope bridge suspended across a steep valley. A belfry without a bell rises beyond the violently fluttering snow.”
  • “A world covered in freezing snow”. Unlike the pale-sun enveloped dying Lothric, this new world with its snow storms is the center of the DLC. What awaits players here?
  • Will players be able to explore this harsh world, that unlike Lothric presents fearsome storms and cold winds stopping your progress?
  • A new pvp mode: The Hollow Arena: A new entry in Dark Souls 3 multiplayer, and unlike invasion PvP, your skills will be tested against fierce opponents. Start training now!
  • “A spell that fires a cold storm. Fitting for a spell born in the setting of this installment, a cold snow world.”

Hey, I’m selling a Pendant if you want it :D

Velka’s kind of a big deal. They probably don’t want to admit it’s her due to how lore centric she is.

  2. >

Well, aside from the fact that Yorshka is only big, whilst Priscilla is enormous:

We know that she’s a dragon crossbreed (from Priscilla’s Dagger–which spells out explicitly what you can gather because, look, we just cut off a tail and got a weapon), and there’s little implication that it’s with humans. We find her off Anor Londo, after all.
Second, the reason she’s there seems more to do with Ariamis and the Painted World itself than any exile. Aside from social exile because the gods were terrified of her ability. Well, that’s what the Peculiar Doll and Lifehunt Scythe say, anyway.

  3. >

Don’t forget about what we found in the rafters of Yorshka’s Church…the last 2 guardians met their maker while waiting in ambush for any would be assassins with malicious intents for Yorshka. Possibly a 3rd & 4th are the corpses we loot the PoCKs from in the bottom of the Church and the Anor Londo Cathedral.

  4. To further add evidence to Priscilla having ties to the Royal family, the largest statue in the first game is watching over the Painted World. The statue is of Gwynevere and her expression/overall aesthetic doesn’t lead me to believe it’s guarding as in “prison guard.” More like “guard to protect.” The Painting Guardians are also there and are outright stated to be protecting the painting.

Gwynevere is portrayed as a Goddess of fertility, bounty, and motherhood if I recall our digging correctly, and her protection would therefore be related to those roles if using traditional mythology concepts. In other words, you have a motherhood figure watching over the Painted World. This does not prove she’s the mother (although that’s my personal best guess) but the statue implies someone wanted a loving presence to watch over the Painted World. And in grand manner I might add.

Easy dude, I never said that I believe in this or that it is very likely. I even started my post by saying that this seems very farfetched…

Nevertheless, there might be some relevance to this whole thing. But I’m with you, 2 NPC’s using a scythe doesn’t explain all of Dark Souls.

I’m just here to ask questions and to speculate on different topics, I am, however, by no means trying to sell an idea. Just to get a thought process going in the community. Because there are people on this board with very good conclusions once brought up by somebody and who have got a talent for uncovering mysteries.

I think you have got a good point with the gods and dragons theme. And since Yorshka is said to be Gwyndolin’s sister, she is definately related to the family of Gwyn. Priscilla might be as well. Both of them are dragon-ladies. We’ll (hopefully) see.

On that note: I found an interesting detail. The name Priscilla actually means ancient or primordial. So she could very well be from the age of ancients or have something to do with the primordial serpents… Could she have even been Gwyn’s wife? There are so many questions unanswered still… I hope they do a proper job at answering just enough and are not leaving huge lore-holes in the end…

Edit: Dang, I just wondered what the name Yorshka could mean… the word “yore” is in there I thought… Well, the word “yore” means primeval times or formerly… that is quite a connection to Priscilla then if you ask me?! And for the “shka” part… the African name “Shaka” (Zulu) is the name of a leader. A leader as in “Company captain Yorshka”? The funniest thing is that Shaka is primarily a name for boys. And that name was given to her by Gwyndolin. Good one FROM! :P

So, another speculation on my behalf: What if Gwyn, in the age of ancients, attacked the dragons and found Priscilla/Yorshka, yet he couldn’t bring himself to kill her. Because of that, he adopted her but his wife clearly wasn’t happy with that, so she got exiled (into the Painted World). After Gwyn left to link the first flame and Gwyndolin ruled Anor Londo, he allowed her to stay with him in Anor Londo again and gave her a new name. Sounds pretty cool to me actually. I like that idea.

“She uses a scythe and so does one NPC!” is a logical gulf in trying to relate Priscilla and Aldia.

And thinking about Priscilla, she’s probably related to Gwyn’s family (Yorshka is a clue), possibly the Nameless King. Gods and dragons. Being related to Nashandra would require a link to Manus, which is humanity. A bit unlikely all round.

  7. >

Actually, that might be a very farfetched idea. But there are also some mutual themes concerning all of this.

    1) Aldia experimented in his keep in order to get rid of the curse. He used undead for his experiments. Somehow, the Forlorn (from DSII) where created this way. In the trailer forlorn souls are said to have a “home” in this snowy world. As other users also mentioned, the Corvian items refer to the Painted World. So Aldia can indeed be linked to the painted world with this.

    2) Aldia was the scholar of the first SIN, which ties him very nicely to Velka, the goddess of sin.

    3) Aldia was allegedly able to recreate a dragon with his experiments. What is Priscilla? A crossbreed between a human and a dragon. Could she be one of his experiments? (This f*cks the timeline from all angles, but time is convoluted isn’t it and so is the world of DS now…)

    4) Priscilla uses lifehunt. And she uses a scythe. Who uses scythes as well? The Forlorn of DSII…

    5) Who else uses a scythe with lifedrain? Nashandra. Where does Aldia appear one last time in DSII… in the boss room of Nashandra…

    6) The music in the trailer reminded a lot of people of Aldias theme, but also of Nashandras theme…

    7) The moment in the trailer, where the narrator says “The Ashes have come at last” is followed by an evil laughter (with two voices, a male and a female one). This reminded me a lot of Nashandra in DSII when she reveals herself as a monstrosity of dark and said “Brave Undead, you have proven yourself to me.”…

    8) Finally, when thinking of voices: Aldia was voiced by the same voice actor as Oswald of Carim. Oswald in DS1 was a pardoner in the services of Velka… So many freaking clues, yet it could still all be pure coincidence…

EDIT: The description of the Great Corvian Scythe says “Great scythe of the forlorn souls guided by heretical storytellers. The Mistress of the Painted World is said to wield a great scythe herself.” But who is the mistress… Priscilla? Probably… or ist it a reborn Nashandra? Maybe the two of them even share a connection. Their bodies and height are eerily similar now that I think about it. Also they use almost the same weapon…

Hmmm… Hmmmm… I have to use my hand and think…

  8. Watched the trailer just now. Not sure what to make of it, but I sure am liking the snowy terrains. Been wanting a snowy DLC for quite some time now.

    >
Pre-order and you’ll get an answer to what the pendant does! No…? Am I-.. Am I too late? :00013:

  9. So I just watched the trailer, and I have one question. Why…the hell…would I want to pre-order….digital DLC? It doesn’t have any bonuses for doing so. It shouldn’t anyway, but why do it then?

  10. Those statues look an awful lot like the lady on a chair. Velka might be here after all…

As for gender derived from translations: if I recall correctly, Japanese doesn’t specify gender by default (and it has a truly staggering number of pronouns and honorifics) and it’s probably better to assume (at this early stage) that “he” is used simply because of convention. “They” would probably be more accurate unless it’s explicitly saying.

  11. No need to apologize. I just wanted to remind everyone how From will occasionally troll their fans.

    Green blossoms anyone?

  12. >

sorry it just annoys me to see people calling that thing velka when we already had two statues of her that look nothing like him

    ImageImage

seriously just how much inconsistent can you get if you make a statues in the same game that looks nothing like the person in question

  13. That Viking looking dude doesn’t look like a boss to me. I don’t even expect him to be a mini-boss. Probably more like the giant crabs and giant Ghru: just a big, tough, enemy.

  14. I wouldn’t say ”proven” gender just yet. Early info for NPCs in DS2 referred to a Melentia as ”he.” This was even after the network test and many of us had already met her.

But yes, current info refers to that character as male

  15. >

    NOPE

it has already been proved by the description that thing with the golden cistern it is a man

  16. Probably already stated, but it looks like we’ll be fighting Velka in the DLC.

    Black hair? Check.
Giant in stature, like every other god? Check.
Flagellating herself, something (Typically) done to purge oneself of sin? done.
Giant shawl of black feathers? Done and done.

If I had to guess, the giant with the axe is the first boss, hunting you down to prevent you from entering the area, some other boss pops up, and then Velka is the last boss of the DLC.

Is it possible that Aldia’s experiments involved the Painted World in some way? I know that painting was mentioned in DS2, but can’t remember the details.

Some have noted similarities between the music in the trailer and Aldia’s theme, but I haven’t checked on that myself.

  18. >
Yeah, it was a bit cheeky, as well as a note on whenever someone has seen a rope bridge in any souls-game, they cry out about it being Ariamis, whether there’s a reason to beyond the bridge or not.

  19. Another thing, there is mention of “forlorn souls” mentioned as part of one of the Corvian item descriptions related to Ariamis (and mentioned in the trailer). What else was “forlorn” with no real place to call home? That’s right! Scholar of the First Sin’s own Forlorn, that dark spirit that randomly invaded you everywhere that was apparently one of Aldia’s experiments, a spirit forever stuck a disembodied form seeking out others to invade.

Some bit of speculation from Scott “Damnnohtml” Jund, known for sarcasm so deadpan you miss it if you blink and some trolly videos in general, that actually sounds legit (but you never know from him): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Geiji95mH0” rel=”nofollow

Perhaps a stretch but anything to make this a cohesive trilogy instead of just calling back to Dark Souls 1 over and over again… I retain some hope. But the question, is if this is the case what would they have to do with the scenario present in this trailer? I dunno, someone else can take a stab at it if they so care to though.
