Earlier this month in PAX West, Randy Pitchford, the President of Gearbox Software might have dropped hints that the new unannounced IP may be the upcoming Borderlands 3.
From Battleborn to Borderlands?
This is reinforced by the recent news of Battleborn shutting its doors on a post in the games forum by Creative Director Randy Varnell aka “Jythri”. In the post, Jythri mentions moving on to a “highly anticipated but unannounced game”.
“Although I’m sad my time on Battleborn is coming to a close, I’m happy to announce that I will play a significant role on this highly anticipated but unannounced game, and I’m sure you’ll be hearing some from me again in the future regarding Gearbox games.”
So far, we have no information on what role Jythri may cover for the new IP. Previously in 2016, another high profile Battleborn designer, Art Director Scott Kester had shifted to the development of the next Borderlands game.
Although Pitchford gave no concrete confirmation, the hints he dropped at PAX West and the timing of Battleborns’ demise suggests a reshuffling of resources for their upcoming “unannounced IP”.
Also, it isn’t a secret that development for the much anticipated Borderlands 3 is taking its time, even with the majority of Gearbox’s developers working on the sequel; and its predecessor, Borderlands 2 was released 5 years ago.
We could say that the resources and manpower freed from Battleborn might be directed to the development of Borderlands 3 to amp up its’ production.
Therefore, it isn’t too crazy to assume that this upcoming IP may very well be Borderlands 3. But, then again this is all just speculation and we could be wrong.
