CD Projekt Red share that most of the development is now full steam ahead on the Cyberpunk 2077 expansion.
CD Projekt Red Now Focused on Cyberpunk 2077 Expansion
As a part of the recent earning report by CD Projekt Red, an update was given on the development for Cyberpunk 2077‘s upcoming expansion. There have also been leaks online that may have given new details about the focus of the expansion.
Cyberpunk 2077 Expansion
Along with a chart detailing ongoing projects, the developer shared that the “bulk of” the development capacity is now focusing on the expansion.
The chart shows the ongoing projects which include GWENT related projects, Witcher 3 next-gen, support for Cyberpunk 2077 for next-gen platforms as well as the expansion. Recently it was announced the Witcher 3 next-gen version will be released sometime in Q4 2022.
With the release of the CP2077 next-gen version, the focus has slowly shifted away to other projects and the promised expansion, with April 2022 showing the majority of efforts on this project. The expansion is slated to be released in 2023, according to a tweet from CD Projekt last month.
Previously the developer announced CP2077 would be receiving free DLC content and story-driven expansions. Not many details have been given on the scope of the expansion, but if it is anything to go by from previous Witcher 3 additions, there could be some sizeable content. CD teased that it would dive “deeper into the world of Cyberpunk 2077…” with a focus on “choices to make through impactful narratives”.
Expansions and Beyond
The Action-RPG also received a minor free DLC which added a few cosmetic items such as new jackets for V and a new vehicle to tear through the streets of the Night City. Patches have also been frequently rolling out since the launch of the game which focused on improving performance, especially for last-gen platforms.
The developer is also working on a 10 part anime series called Cyberpunk: Edgerunners being developed in collaboration with Studio Trigger, expected to release in the second half of the year on Netflix. The series was teased back in 2020, during one of the Night City Wire livestreams.
Rumour/Leaks
This section contains some minor spoilers for the upcoming expansion.
A few leaks have been released recently about the expansion. We won’t go into too much detail concerning the story, those curious about it can check the thread on the subreddit but here are some interesting points concerning the further content.
A redditor shared files supposedly datamined but have since been deleted from the thread. It contained details that the story DLC will feature a mysterious character called Songbird which was previously datamined according to VGC. The files contain a model of this character and a range of customisation options. The character is not found within the game currently.
Other details reference story missions with Songbird and an absence of the character Johnny Silverhand due to characters being able to silence him. Dialogues reference events happening in the expansion. The content will also take players to the Pacifica region, which is currently not accessible in the game.
Whether these leaks are substantial is a little hard to tell but of course, take with a grain of salt as nothing is confirmed. We’ll have to wait to hear more details from the developer themselves. So far there is no roadmap or release date for further content.
