Avowed will be limited to 30 fps on Xbox Series X|S consoles, but its art director doesn’t believe this will be a problem in a single-player first-person game.
Avowed Will Be Limited To 30 Fps
Avowed was one of the highlights of Microsoft’s lineup at this year’s Gamescom, though naturally overshadowed by someone like Indiana Jones. Obsidian’s RPG will be one of the first major games to release next year.
Although it was initially scheduled for this year, it was delayed to February 18, 2025โnot for technological reasons, but to avoid “crowding” the fall release calendar on Xbox Series X|S, which in just a few weeks will include Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, Black Ops 6, STALKER 2, and finally Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny on December 9.
Despite this, and although the Gamescom demo was well-received by attendees, the game will not reach 60 fps on console, instead being capped at 30 fps, whether you play on Xbox Series X or Series S.
In an interview on the Iron Lords podcast, Avowed’s art director, Matt Hansen, said they are aiming for the game to run at 30 frames per second. “It’s a first-person, single-player game, and you don’t necessarily need 60 frames per second,” he says.
“This allows us to get much more out of the visual effects, lighting, and all that. It’s a trade-off we decided to make relatively early on, and we’re very happy with it.” “The game is very smooth considering how visually dense it is, and that was our goal,” he says.
Avowed Joins the List of Xbox games Capped at 30 Fps
Avowed joins the list of Xbox games at 30 fps although many received patches later on. Microsoft has only shown the Xbox console version, but on PC, the framerate shouldn’t be limited to 60 fps. Many fans might wonder if it’s, once again, the “drag” of making an Xbox Series S version that’s preventing Avowed from reaching 60 fps on consoles.
This also happened with Starfield, but eight months later, it received an update that finally allowed the fps to be increased on consoles. Even Redfall eventually received a 60 fps patch on consoles.
For now, Obsidian has two or three more months of development for Avowed that they didn’t initially have, but improving the game’s performance doesn’t seem to be a priority. But given how visually dense they say it is, perhaps it won’t be necessary.
