If you’re a child of the ’80s then odds are you’ve read some of Steve Jackson & Ian Livingstone’s Fighting Fantasy books, such as The Warlock of Firetop Mountain. If so, you may be pleased to hear that Asmodee Digital have published Nomad Games‘ Fighting Fantasy Legends on iOS & Android devices. It was previously released on Steam.
Fighting Fantasy Legends out now for smartphones
The Fighting Fantasy Legends game is a casual RPG with card-and-dice-based-gameplay. It was developed by Cheshire-based Nomad Games. Asmodee Digital are also the company responsible for the app versions of Settlers of Catan, Pandemic and Ticket to Ride. So they know their cult games.
The game casts you as an adventuring elf, dwarf or human. And just like in the books, whether you win or lose is down to the roll of the dice. The open-world layout lets you to dip in and out of maps based on “Citadel of Chaos,” “The Warlock of Firetop Mountain,” and “City of Thieves.”
Fighting Fantasy Legends is faithful to the source material except in one rather nice way: it’s more forgiving. In the books, you could be lead on a wild goose chase, reading pages and pages only to face an inevitable defeat. For instance, defeating the Warlock of Firetop Mountain but it still ending in defeat due to you not finding certain treasures along the way. If that happened, you’d have to start over from the beginning again. This doesn’t happen in Final Fantasy Legends. Instead, if your stamina runs out then you’ll wake up outside the city with a few wounds. Otherwise, you’ll be fine.
You can buy Fighting Fantasy Legends on Steam ($10), iOS ($5) and Android ($5.50).
