Age of Empires 2 New DLC
The legendary strategy game Age of Empires II has turned 25, and it remains alive and well thanks to Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, which continues to receive content, such as Chronicles: Battle for Greece, which will be released on November 14 for PC and Xbox consoles.
This new DLC or expansion is set in Ancient Greece and includes a campaign spanning more than a century of history, including the Ionian Revolt, the Greco-Persian Wars, and the Peloponnesian War, with iconic historical figures like Artemisia, Themistocles, and Brasidas brought to life through voice acting and animated scenes.
Created by a team of Age of Empires veterans, the visual overhaul includes new models for land and naval units and buildings across three new civilizations, along with a unique naval combat system and special civilization mechanics.
Chronicles: Battle for Greece
Battle for Greece is the first expansion in the Chronicles series for Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition and offers an immersive narrative experience set in classical Greece.
This content includes three new civilizations: Achaemenids, Athenians, and Spartans, each with unique characteristics and mechanics, although these civilizations wonโt be available for ranked matches.
The DLC features a campaign of 21 scenarios that spans over a century of history, from the Ionian Revolt to the end of the Peloponnesian Wars. Players will experience iconic historical battles such as Marathon, Thermopylae, and Salamis, and encounter historical figures like the Spartan admiral Lysander, the Athenian statesman Pericles, and the warrior queen Artemisia.
Battle for Greece also introduces innovations in naval combat, with six types of military ships, including ramming ships and ships with catapults, along with new trading options via merchant ships and the ability to collect a new gold resource called oysters.
Additionally, 55 new land units, 19 new naval units, and 85 new buildings have been added, along with unique civilization mechanics, such as the customization of Town Centers and the ability to implement government policies to strategically manage your empire.
New Narrative, Animated Cutscenes, New Music & More
Battle for Greece is a very unique expansion as it wasnโt created by World’s Edge, but by the CaptureAge team, which was initially a fan-made spectator tool for Age of Empires 2. However, the team was incorporated as an official support studio for Age of Empires a few years ago.
Having recently bolstered its ranks with some modders and veteran Age of Empires developers with experience working on AAA games, this community-driven team, once small, is now responsible for a full expansion.
Battle for Greece is also the first in a series of similar expansions to come in the future, all with the subtitle Chronicles. They will be “dedicated to narrative and historical immersion, primarily focusing on the single-player mode.”
