Salt and Sanctuary: An Interview With Ska Studios

Salt and Sanctuary is a 2D side-scrolling dark action RPG coming to PC, PS4, and PS Vita in the late summer or fall of this year. The game is very much inspired by the Souls franchise and you will notice immediate similarities to these games. Some examples: you have a Stamina bar, which dictates the amount of attacking, rolling and blocking (with your shield) you can do before you have to wait for it to refill. There are Creeds, which are sort of like Covenants that the player can join. These will cause the player’s Sanctuaries to look different and to have different NPCs in them that sell different equipment and provide different benefits. When you die you lose your Salt, which is very similar to Souls, and can be spent to increase the player level, granting them a skill point.

As I am not a 2D genre player (in general), I was a bit skeptical about how much I myself would actually enjoy playing, even if others did. I can tell you right now, this game has completely changed my opinion about the genre. For starters, you will immediately notice the gorgeous and immersive hand drawn art style of the game. It has such a unique feel and setting, your jaw just drops. I can honestly say I’ve never seen a 2D game that pulls you in quite the same way. The next thing you’ll notice is the music. It’s subtle, but completely adds to the overall feeling of the game. It’s intense in intense places and soothing in your Sanctuary. It really dictates the mood of the game. The combat feels familiar and fluid. Souls veterans will get the hang of it in no time and feel as though they were right at home. And last but not least, the game is challenging. I got my face blown off repeatedly (and not just from gravity). There were areas of the game that really felt like they were meant to test your ability and THEY DO. This has instantly become one of the must play games of 2015!

Because the Souls community was taking interest in this game we reached out to Michelle and James (the Devs) at Ska Studios and asked them some questions about the game:

Early next year? NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I was hoping this game would give me something to do until DkS3 and The Division released. If they are waiting until next year, the should probably just push it back to the summer. Would be the perfect game to pass the time between the March releases and the Winter releases.

That is badass dude, I am totally looking forward to that. I am a self-taught or actually in the process of teahcing myself, lol, game developement and they are just such a huge inspiration to me. Please try to get as much Salt and Sanctuary, or hell, just pure anything SKA Studios, get as much material as you can.

I am making a prediction that Salt and Sanctuary is going to spawn an ENTIRE genre of 2d souls-esque games, what do you think?

I am working on one myself, but it is in purely concept stages at the moment.

The update I got when I was there was early next year. Was really hoping for this year, but James said it would be really difficult to do.

I actually met them at E3 in June. We had lunch and then watched the Sony Press Conference together. They are both just really awesome people and we email back and forth regularly. I’m trying to setup a stream with them soon, so stay tuned for that :)

  6. Great Interview Castielle, great freakin job! I admire the team behind Salt&Sanctuary sooo much, it is almost like my perfect dream lol. Did you know the only 2 devs are Husband and Wife? that is awesome to me!

Anyways I am really excited and cannot wait to sink my teeth into the game, I have watched multiple gameplay vids and dev streams and it is absolutely fantastic looking! They have done an awesome job, especially for there only being a couple of people working on it. They have an Twitch stream also you all should check out.

One thing I want to do is try out the Dishwasher Samurai? Is that a good game?

  7. I saw the highlights stream and it looks great so far, I can’t wait for the game to be released. Good luck!

  8. Hey guys!

Just stopping by to say hello! We’ll pop in here and there. Feel free to ask questions and give feedback. We’ll do what we can! Also if you stop by our Twitch streams, that’s often the fastest way to get our attention and get a question answered!

    Thanks!

Please be nice, though, we can be a tad fragile. :D
