Delayed Games of 2020

In the past few weeks there have a been a number of announcements that have centered around the current pandemic, which has caused numerous delays from gaming industry events being rescheduled, reshuffled or causing cancellations, to games pushing launch dates. Due to the current situation, many teams are now working from home causing development to slow, posing challenges for studios to stick with their original schedules that were laid out before the Covid-19 outbreak. There are also a number of delays due to other development reasons.

Delayed Games of 2020

So, in order keep track of games that have been delayed in 2020, we’ve rounded up some of the major releases including a bunch of RPGs that are now launching a bit later than schedule. These include a mix of roleplaying games, from all kinds of genres as well as some rather highly anticipated titles. So without further ado let’s get into them!

Hellpoint

Let’s start with the most recently announced delay for Hellpoint. Hellpoint is a dark sci-fi Action-RPG set aboard a ship with some very frightening inhabitants. It combines inspiration from games such as Dark Souls and Dead Space. Grabbing influence from movies such as Event Horizon and Hellraiser. So if challenging combat in a deep space nightmare sounds like your cup of tea, then you’re in for a hell of a ride.

Originally set to launch this April 13th, recently developer Cradle Games and publisher tinyBuild announced in a press release that they would need to push back their launch date to the window of Q2 2020 due to the current situation. But those who are eager to get a taste of the hellish experience Hellpoint has to offer can pick up on PC, a free chapter sequel called Hellpoint The Thespian Feast. Don’t worry about spoilers as this chapter acts as a side story, deepening the lore.

Hellpoint will now release on PC in Q2 2020.

New World

Next on our list of the delayed is the fictional world of Aeternum. New World is an open-world MMORPG by Amazon Game Studios, a highly anticipated game centered around action combat. There is also a weapon class system, so rather than choosing a class, you can opt for a weapon with it’s own weapon tree to suit your playstyle. Set in the Age of Exploration, New World adds survival elements as players attempt to colonise Aeternum, a mysterious island. The MMO promises massive battles with up 100 players in PvP.

However Amazon recently announced that it’s original May launch date has been pushed to August 25th. There will be a closed-beta happening in July, and the alpha will remain live which has been providing valuable feedback through player experience.

New World is now expected to release on PC on August 25th. No announcements have been made so far for console versions. If you’re eager to find out more about the title be sure to read/watch Everything About New World, Amazon’s Atypical MMORPG.

Elder Scrolls Online: Greymoor

A title on this list which has the least amount of delay compared it’s original set launch date, the Elder Scrolls Online: Greymoor. The upcoming expansion Greymoor is still going release in the same month, but a week later than it’s set May 18th release date for PC. This delay also goes for the console versions which were meant to release on June 2nd. While Bethesda hasn’t pinned down the exact date for the expansion, it’s good to know the lead time isn’t that far off.

Elder Scrolls Online Greymoor sets players on an adventure to somewhat familiar lands of Skyrim. Set a 1000 years before the Elder Scrolls V, Greymoor offers a whole new kind of experience promising witch covens, vampires and Nords. It will feature Western Skyrim such as Solitude and Blackreach, giving 30+ hours of content. Bringing a new Antiquities system where players can treasure hunt for trophies and furnishings across the ESO world. There will also be the addition of a new 12 player trial Kyne’s Aegis and the rebalancing of the Vampire skill line.

Elder Scrolls Online Greymoor will release on PC in May a week later than it’s original May 18th date, as well as PS4 and Xbox One a week later than it’s original June 2nd launch date. The Last of Us Part II

Ellie returns in a tale of revenge in the post-apocalyptic United States, in The Last of Us Part II. Previous trailers have shown main character Ellie on a mission, teasing a revenge plot, and on the war path to kill everyone who’s wronged her. A sudden a horrific incident calls for blood, expect plenty of violence and grittier scenes than before. The title also sets to bring stealth mechanics and some stunning post-apocalyptic scenery.

As for when we can expect the continuation of Ellie’s story? Well that’s unknown at this moment, as developer Naughty Dog and publisher Sony have announced the delay is “until further notice”. We can assume it will release later this year, as it was originally set to launch this May, but at this point it’s hard to say.

The Last of Us Part II is set to launch exclusively on PS4, with no new release date as of yet.

Wasteland 3

Next up is the XCOM inspired turn-based RPG Wasteland 3 which takes place in a post-apocalyptic Colorado. Players can use ATVs to get around the overworld map, traversing the snow covered terrain. You can also expect an Action Point system for turn-based moves, cover system and Ambush.

Probably the most anticipated new feature of Wasteland 3 is cooperative play. You and a friend can now take on the Wasteland together, each controlling your own squad. You can find others to play with online with as well. If you want to know more about the title you can check out our Wasteland 3 Preview: Rocky Mountain High Caliber.

Minecraft Dungeons

Next on the list is Minecraft Dungeons, developed by Mojang and is the first stand-alone game set in the Minecraft universe since the initial game. Expect RPG elements with questing against the villainous Arch-Illager and plenty of treasure to discover. Take on the cubed world in single player mode or with friends, with up to four in a group.

Combat is in real-time, where you will need to choose weapons, gear and enchantments. Your abilities will rely on the gear you equip, with both ranged and melee weapons at your disposal. Expect procedurally generated dungeons, many biomes to explore, with plenty of spiders and skeletons to encounter.

Originally set to launch this April but has been delayed, Minecraft Dungeons will now be coming to Xbox One, Playstation 4, PC and Switch this May 26th.

Cyberpunk 2077

Delayed while not due to the pandemic, Cyberpunk 2077 was announced to be coming a bit later than expected this year, now launching on September 17th for Playstation 4, Xbox One and PC. The RPG is a highly anticipated title by the same developers who brought you the Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. CD Projekt Red shared they would need more time developing the Action-RPG to ensure they “finish playtesting, fixing and polishing”.

Cyberpunk 2077 is a new IP for the developer, based on tabletop universe. Players will be able to customise their character from looks to builds, with an array of implants. There is also a deep world to explore, where player choices will have an impact. Even the clothes you wear will be reacted to by the NPCs in this dystopian world. There will also be multiple endings depending on your playthrough. If that hasn’t sold it for you Keanu Reeves is in it.

Cyberpunk 2077 releases on September 17th on Playstation 4, Xbox One and PC as well as Stadia.

Biomutant

Inspired by a Kung-fu fable, Biomutant grabbed the attention of many with it’s furry mutant creatures and martial arts. The open-world RPG has been delayed a few times due to further improvements needed, with no confirmation on exactly when it will release but publisher THQ Nordic recently shared it’s still in development.

What’s exciting about upcoming Biomutant is the high amount of customisations players will get with their character, where even the size of your creature’s head will determine their intelligence level. There are also survival elements where clothing you choose will protect you from the elements.

Biomutant is expected to release sometime in 2020 for Playstation 4, Xbox One and PC.

Fairy Tail

The game follows “The Grand Magic Games” story, letting those who are fans of the tale to relive the magic. But there are plenty of a new additional stories to enjoy that have never been seen before. Fairy Tail will now release on Playstation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC on June 25th.

Gods & Monsters

A new IP was revealed back in 2019 for Ubisoft called Gods & Monsters which takes on inspiration from their previous title Assassin’s Creed Odyssey with the myths and legends of Greece, but with a completely different story and look, more akin to Zelda: Breath of the Wild. But creative director Jonathon Dumont shares it will be “a very unique adventure”.

Originally Gods & Monsters was suppose to launch before the end of March 2020, however Ubisoft decided to move its launch to sometime between Q2 and Q3 of 2020, which could be anytime between July-December. Ubisoft also shared that the game will be optimised for the next generation of consoles so it could be releasing when PS5 or Xbox Series X arrives, if they’re aiming for that launch.

Gods & Monsters will arrive sometime between July and December 2020.

Outriders

Next on the list, Outriders has been in development since 2015, an RPG shooter that takes players to the planet of Enoch as a “last chance”, where humanity plans to colonise after Earth becomes uninhabitable. While this seems like a good chance for humanity, things take a turn. They encounter strange energy storms called “The Anomaly” which rages, causing the team to return to cryo-sleep.

Awakening now to a new existence, the world has shifted with the power of The Anomaly now unleashed, causing them to gain supernatural powers which include wielding fire with hands, and freezing enemies in place.

Described as a drop-in-drop-out co-op, Outriders was originally supposed to launch in summer 2020 but was pushed back to a holiday 2020 release to coincide with the launch of PS5 and Xbox Series X, but will be releasing on PS4, Xbox One as well as PC.
