Welcome to the Top 5 Upcoming RPGs of May 2020! In this series we highlight the Top 5 RPGs for the upcoming month. In this edition, we’re going to take a look at each of the titles, talk a little about each, and then explain why we think they deserve to be on the list. So join me now and find a mixture of some hidden gems and old favorites given a shiny new coat of paint.

Top 5 Upcoming RPGs Of May 2020

Last month’s Top 5 brought a long awaited remake to our midst, yes I’m talking about the Final Fantasy 7 Remake which we really enjoyed playing over on our Twitch channel, and it took our top spot last month with it’s interesting combat, updated graphics and a classic story told anew. This month we’re looking forward to some old favourites coming to new systems, a very unusual point of view in terms of gameplay as well as narrative, and familiar lands getting a sort of prequel in terms of adventure. Sit tight, get comfortable as we bring you our Top 5 RPGs for this May.

Last month’s top spot went to the Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

Honourable Mention: XCOM 2 & XCOM 2 Collection

Release Date: May 29th

Platform: Nintendo Switch

Developer: Firaxis Games

Publisher: Take-Two Interactive

Both XCOM 2 and XCOM 2 Collection are coming to the Nintendo Switch this May. XCOM 2 is the sequel to the tactical turn-based RPG that follows the events after Earth gets put under alien rule. Causing a global resistance that bands together to take back command.

Players in XCOM 2 get to take control of their very own tactical team, with five soldier classes, each with their own skill tree, so you can customise them to your own strategy. The combat system offers plenty in terms of flexibility in combat, use concealment to ambush your enemies and even loot enemies to gain gear and artifacts.

If you want all the downloadable content, be sure to check out  the XCOM 2 Collection which includes a bundle of the base game with 4 DLC packs, the Resistance Warrior Pack, Anarchy’s Children, Alien Hunters, Shen’s Last Gift and the War of the Chosen expansion.

XCOM 2 and XCOM 2 Collection releases on Nintendo Switch on May 29th.

5. Maneater

Release Date: May 22nd

Platform: PC/PS4/Xbox One/Nintendo Switch

Developer: Tripwire Interactive

Ever wanted to roleplay…as a shark? Well now you can in the latest Action RPG or sharkPG Maneater. In this single-player you will be taking on one of the deadliest predators of the seas, in an open-world experience. Start off as a small shark pup where you will have to learn to survive by eating your way, fending for yourself against wildlife and man. Find what you need to grow and evolve even further than what nature intended to take your revenge.

Maneater has a story-based campaign voiced by Christ Parnell known for Rick and Morty, SNL and more, in a reality TV show type narrative. Tailor your shark ways to your own playstyle and become the vicious shark you’ve always wanted to be. There also full day/night cycles and 7 large regions to explore. This looks to be a truly unique tale with plenty of bite.

Maneater will release on PC, Playstation 4, and Xbox One May 22nd.

4. Minecraft Dungeons

Release Date: May 26th

Platform: Xbox One, Playstation 4, Switch, PC,

Developer: Mojang

Publisher: tinyBuild

You may remember we talked about Minecraft Dungeons in last month’s top 5, well it got delayed due to the current situation but it is now releasing this May. It follows the tale of a lone Illager, who is outcast from society. He wanders the land only to stumble upon the Orb of Dominance. Now with this great power, he has become corrupted with evil and has a thirst for vengeance to takeover the Overworld.

The game is a dungeon crawler that will include a mix of Minecraft monsters and figures that fans know and love. Take on the cubed world in single player mode or with friends, with up to four in a group. Using Minecraft’s blocky visuals that has made it famous, expect RPG elements with questing against the villainous Arch-Illager and plenty of treasure to discover. Combat is in real-time, and you will also need to choose weapons, gear and enchantments.

Minecraft Dungeons is expected to release on Xbox One, Playstation 4, PC and Switch this May 26th.

3. Utawarerumono: Prelude to the Fallen

Release Date: May 26th

Platform: PS4/PS Vita

Developer: Leaf

Publisher: NIS America

Yup I’m 100% sure I messed up that title name, but this JRPG is coming is finally coming to the west. It’s epic tale follows a story of a man who has lost all his memories, and awakens in an strange world, inhabited by a tribe of beastfolk. Described as a story of love, war and about embracing one’s destiny.

This tactical RPG intertwines a visual novel story with battles that reflect the adventure. This remake gives Prelude to the Fallen a graphic update, converting those sprite figures into 3D, while enhancing the original battle experience. Expect Chain Attacks that not only deal damage but can even heal allies. Gain the upper hand by using a Co-Op Chain, where attacks can be coordinated between certain units with the major advantage of a wide target area. There’s also Magecraft, Healing Arts, abilities and more to master.

Utawarerumono: Prelude to the Fallen releases on May 26th on Playstation 4 and PS Vita.

2. Sword Art Online: Alicization Lycoris

Release Date: May 22nd

Platform: PC/PS4/Xbox One

Developer: Bandai Namco

Publisher: Bandai Namco

Take on the role of Kirito in a gaming experience in Sword Art Online Alicization Lycoris. Dive into the “Underworld”, an intriguing place set in the anime’s Alicization arc. The title sets to bring intense action-packed real-time battles using a combination of both sword skills, sacred arts and some favourite Sword Art Online characters.

The JRPG includes a Daily Quest system which will give players objectives such as defeating 10 enemy types, getting 5 units of items, use 10 Sword Skills or even doing 3 Link Attacks with particular characters and more. The game will come with free monthly update content which includes Raid Bosses, and a Premium Pass with exclusive content which is going to be half the size of the base game.

Sword Art Online Alicization Lycoris will launch on May 22nd worldwide on PC via Steam, Playstation 4 and Xbox One.

1. Elder Scrolls Online: Greymoor

Release Date: May 2020 (Delayed a week from May 18th)

Platform: PC

Developer: Zenimax

Publisher: Bethesda

Greymoor is the next expansion to hit the Elder Scrolls Online, following the Dark Heart of Skyrim. While Greymoor takes place in Skyrim, it is set almost a 1000 years before the events that take place in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Greymoor will feature Western Skyrim such as Solitude and Blackreach, giving 30+ hours of content.

Along with a new chapter comes a new Antiquities system where players can treasure hunt for trophies and furnishings across the ESO world. There will also the addition of a new 12 player trial Kyne’s Aegis and the rebalancing of the Vampire skill line. ESO will be adding a new type of public quest which works in similar way to Dolmens or the dragon hunts you find in Elsweyr. The Elder Scrolls Online: Greymoor will launch on PC this May, delayed a week after the original May 18th launch date. PS4 and Xbox One versions will launch 2 weeks after in June.
