Watch Inon Zur Playing the Fallout 4 Main Theme On Piano

As the hype continues to build for Fallout 4, Bethesda have been very active releasing little tid bits on YouTube for us Vault Dwellers to enjoy. In case you didn’t know, Inon Zur is the principle composer for Fallout 4 and has worked on every Fallout since Tactics. No one knows the sound scape of the Wasteland better than Mr Zur and his music has underscored countless hours of exploration, fights, dialogue and memorable moments from the series.

In a post on Bethesda.net, Zur talked about his inspiration for the main theme and his compositional style. One big part of his focus for Fallout 4 is his desire to make the score more personal:

“I have a very nice grand piano at home, and I recorded myself playing the main theme,” Zur says. Todd’s first reaction was mixed: He liked the idea of the piano, but he found the actual sound to be too bright, bordering on harsh. Todd and Mark wanted something warmer. “So I created a combination between a real piano and an electric piano sound,” Zur says. “A sound that is really round and not bright at all but very lush.” When Zur played this for Todd and Mark, both of them immediately knew this was what they wanted. “So following that lead on, there are multiple times that I use this,” Zur says. “You also hear it first in the main theme. This is not a mistake or just a random choice. The piano will stay with us throughout the whole score.”

Check out the video below of Zur playing the main theme on his grand piano at home, it’s something special for sure.

  1. I don’t think it’s any more thematic than Fallout 3, but I certainly think it’s more overt in its themes. There’s about 3 or 4 parts to the music i can hear that I think will be themes or hooks throughout the game.

I love Inon Zur. He’s one of those composers who generally lets the music do the talking, but seeing him actually play one of his works makes me smile. I’m also massively envious of his house haha

  2. It’s quite thematic compared to Fallout 3, much more dramatic in the tonal range and crescendo than Fallout 3, which was a bit more ominous. Great composer, thanks for showing this side of the development process.
