From Software Confirms Work on Armored Core & 2 Other Games

In an interview with IGN, From Software president Hidetaka Miyazaki has confirmed that the studio is working on 3 games at the moment, one of which is confirmed to be Armored Core.

“So there are several titles that we are currently working on. Some of those are dark fantasy, some of those could be a mech [game] – that’s one thing. The second thing is that one of the new titles I’ve been working on will probably comply with the expectations from the fans in straightforward manner.

The last thing is that another title will probably be a little bit weird. When we actually announce the title, probably fans will react with ‘oh, what the hell is this very weird game that Miyazaki has created?’”

After confirming that one of the titles is Armored Core, Miyazaki went on to say the following:

So when I say weird, I mean that the genre we’re trying to try might be a little bit weird. Not only that, but all the other actual game content might be a little bit weird, yes.

There are still several obstacles we need to overcome to launch those new titles, so we’re not sure how many more years we need to build those, but we’re looking forward to making an announcement in the future.

So Soulsborne fans can take heart that at least one of the games will be in that vein of third person action. We’re very curious to see what this new weird title is as well as what a new Armored Core could look like. We don’t have to wait too long for new content though, as Ashes of Ariandel is due for Dark Souls 3 in a little over a month. Thoughts on what you’d like to see from From Software going forward?

I played a demo of Armor Core 4. Fun, but it didn’t interest me very much. Not my kind of robot action shooter. Can’t say I wouldn’t like another game like Bloodborne, but something unlike Souls in general would be interesting, even if just for the rage comment about it not being souls.

Probably not the only one, but giant robots that shoot swarms of missiles and lasers at each other are pretty popular.

  3. i’m the only one with zero interest in armored core or anything that is not a souls style dark fantasy rpg?

  4. whatever it is, you know some people will be pissed it isn’t:

    1. Souls
    2. like Souls
    3. as good as or like [insert Souls game here]
    4. exactly what they want.

  5. BloodBorne 2…or a sucessor to it (like Demon Souls/Dark Souls)

    I’m pretty confident on that

  6. Bumping this to relate to E3 2017 discussion – FromSoftware said they were working on 3 titles back in September 2016, and specifically:

“The second thing is that one of the new titles I’ve been working on will probably comply with the expectations from the fans in straightforward manner”

SotFS was a good thing for next-gen console adopters, it was nice to see the game improved upon with the extra processing power available, even if it wasn’t as grand an effort as it could have been. It was an odd problem of being in the timeframe of a generation switch.

The debacle came down to how their publisher, Namco, positioned the SKUs and pricing on PC. They could have been more evil, they could have been more generous, and they could have prevented the matchmaking schism on PC.

That would be cool! Imagine a Dead Space style mixed with Dark Souls. They would have to offer a new set of pants with the game, damn!

  9. Talk about new game, I wished FROM make space sci-fi game!

WITH DARK SOUL theme of course! would be super weird and epic adventure game like no one did it before!

  10. More Darkfantasy? I was hoping they’d go for something different like Cyberpunk, though that would be just copying the witcher guys :P

Still awesome, can’t wait for more news.

  11. if Miyasaki and FROM manage to make an even better game than bloodborne with the souls concept, I would be totally amazed.
I never player armored core so I have no idea
the weird game is …promising knowing those guys.

Yeah if they could either make a new game like AC2 or AC3, or remake them in a new engine, that would be great I reckon. I agree that the feeling of weight, and actually piloting a gigantic slab of metal, was kinda lost in AC4 and AC4:FA as they made it into more anime mechs that can race around at super speed.
I also agree with your thoughts on AC5 and AC:VD (come on, that just LOOKS like AC:Venereal Disease!). The focus on co-op and online play really damaged the single-player, which has always been a strong point of the earlier titles.
Plus I found all the new ideas to just be detrimental to the game. The introduction of the three damage types was…..interesting, but in an attempt to recapture the heavier feeling of the older games, I feel like they went too far, and everything was way too slow and clunky.

  13. wasnt BB back then not also a bit “weird” because it was in some Points different from the usual souls games? i would still hope for a BB2 – even if it will not Happening…. but if its going to be a soulsbourn-ish game with new world, Setting, Story and all Count me in ;)

  14. I am glad I am not the only one didn’t like ac v and vs that much. When I play ac iv and for answer I felt like I and ac became whole thing, it’s really Bella fun to able to do everything as I wanted to. But ac v is big down for me, I felt disconnected, sluggish and driving tank…. It’s not feel right.

I hope from not make the same mistake this time.

It’s like asking people who loved bloodborne to play bloodborne 2 but with dark soul combat mechanic ( you know what I meaning )

Don’t get me wrong, I loved dark 1, it’s deadly, one wrong move and you die like pig. Bloodborne is fast and furious, its different fun.

Agreed; I don’t think they will walk away from the genre they pioneered, so I imagine we’ll see another type of Bloodborne rather than a DkS4.

And yeah, the publishing on PC bit is very clearly getting better. I love the Souls Series, but the whole Scholar of the First Sin debacle really soured my liking of DkS2. So glad they knew what they were doing going into DkS 3.

I really would like a new Armored Core game in the style of the first and especially the early third Armored Core generations. While I remember a lot of people hating the clunky controls, ACs in those games felt like they had plausible limitations in how giant humanoid mecha would actually need to be built an be operated; they moved and handled with a sense of weight. Those sort of limitations also allowed for what I feel like were genuinely more build diversity (not that there weren’t balance issues).

I didn’t care for the fourth generation’s more “super-robot”-y approach where even the tanks could zip around like crazy. The idea of the fifth generation’s focus on co-op also didn’t appeal to me at all.

  17. Business-wise they won’t walk away from the Soulsborne game engine, and not make something. The development investment they’ve already paid up front and return ratio for generating something based off that tech is too good to pass up. The nice thing is they can at least generate some new story/IP.

I hope they keep publishing on PC. DS1 was clearly a struggle, but I’ve really enjoyed the quality improvement of playing DS2/DS3 on PC more than DS1/BB on console.

Heh any of the PS1 games could do with a remake or reboot I reckon, they all had pretty good stories imo

  19. For the weird and unknown game, I’m expecting either an open-world game like The Witcher or GTA (that kinda open world thing), or a genre they’ve never really gone near, like an FPS of some kind, or perhaps even a racing game?

For Armored Core…..I’m both really, REALLY excited, and a little worried. I wasn’t a fan of AC5 and AC:VD, and I really don’t want them to go down that route. There’s a reason that the PS1 AC games, as well as AC2 and AC3, are generally the best in the series, and that’s because they’re relatively simple, unlike later games that shoehorned so many different mechanics and stuff into the games (here’s looking at you AC:Nexus’ booster heat mechanic!).
    *ahem*
I wonder what timeline they’ll use, since they have three timelines now they can go back to, or maybe they’ll start a fourth? (Yes, AC:V and AC:VD continued the story of AC:4 and AC:FA, it was just waaaaaaaaaay further on in terms of time)

    Not at all.
New and weird? Fromsoft? I’m already hyped.
I wonder though if it will even be an action game.
    You never really know.
