DKS3 The Ringed City: First Gameplay Footage, New PvP Arenas, Matchmaking Changes

Dark Souls 3 is releasing its final DLC: The Ringed City in March 28th, and the first gameplay footage of the upcoming DLC is now available for fans to scrutinize and theorycraft, much like we did with the announcement trailer.

The Ringed City Gameplay

Spoilers in video for locations, enemies, and a boss.

Fromsoftware and Bandai Namco have listened to the feedback provided and the second DLC features more playtime, more content, and more bosses.

The DLC brings impressive areas to explore, with somewhat familiar enemies that are however altogether new, walking that narrow line between reminding you of the original Dark Souls and moving in completely unexpected ways. It’s all spiced up with that persistent feel that Bloodborne isn’t too far away from this realm. This article will be expanded to add more details as they come.

Ringed City Lore

Fear not the dark, ashen one. Journey to the world’s end to search for the Ringed City and encounter new lands, new bosses, new enemies with new armor, magic and items. Experience the epic final chapter of a dark world that could only be created by the mind of Hidetaka Miyazaki. This new adventure has players chasing after the Slave Knight Gael to the literal end of the world as he searches for the Dark Soul of Humanity.

At the close of the Age of Fire, as the world ends and all lands converge upon themselves, a lone adventurer descends into the madness of the earth and uncovers the secrets of the past. As players make their way to the fabled Ringed City they will encounter ancient beasts, a new cast of characters teetering on the edge of insanity, new armor, weapons, magic, and at the bottom of it all, a long lost city filled with new horrors for players to overcome.

A Dark Souls 3 The Fire Fades / Game of the Year edition will be available for sale on April 21st, bundling the base game and both DLCs for new players. Excited? Sound off in the comments!

I posted a thread in the Lore forums about how I think the Darklurker is relevant to the Ringed City :P

Also, I’m late to the party, most of the comments have been made already, but I just want to say that the Knights with the Dark Sign burned into their chest are SAHWEET!

Also also, I really want GSD to cast the big ghost like soul dreg dudes you see in Vaati’s video he posted up. Launching those things at people would be amazing.

  2. The dagger has blue light in the blade itself. So I is probably always split damage and the dagger blade makes up about half the length to 2/3 the length of what I assume will be a straight sword, but could be a rapier. It is long compared to our other daggers it looks like to me. It would be weird to have another dedicated int rapier. If it is a rapier, I’ll just use the one we have for length to be honest. It would have to have significant a damage difference to use over the CSR or be full magic damage.

  3. If it’s listed as split physical and magic, my assumption would be that the magic applies to the transformed mode and the physical applies to the dagger mode.

I’m having a hard time imagining the use of a weapon that flips between dagger and rapier in a game like Dark Souls, though. Isn’t it slower than just switching to a different weapon? What special traits does the weapon have to set it apart from either beyond the ability to flip between the two? Is it just so it weighs less?

Strange weapon. Fancy as all get out, but strange.

  4. I re-examined the first trailer. It looks like before transforming the “lightsaber,” is a dagger with a long hilt. It also looks like a weapon art shield. The silver eagle kite shield specifically. I would say that confirms it. Weapon art transforms the aquamarine dagger into a straight sword. It could be a rapier, but I doubt it.

It is probably split damage given the dagger part looks solid, but I wonder if it changes to pure magic after transforming?

  5. I’m confident this is the case, but we should keep in mind nothing has outright stated that GSD is the giant punch-y attack thing.

  6. The aquamarine dagger is interesting in function. I assume the flip to “light saber” animation is triggered by weapon art (L2) but that would mean 2 handing the dagger first. Obviously we see this done one handed with shield in other hand…the shield could be a WA shield, but then there would still be a different animation and stance without shield, right? Perhaps you can toggle btwn 1 & 2 handing while holding L2?

    And the description more curious…

“A dagger fitted with aquamarine crystal”
Engraved with a prayer in the old tongue to ward off incident. Perhaps it was a parting gift given to one sent off on great travels

    Sulyvahn perhaps?

I was just about to say I was hoping GSD was the giant dark attack. That’s freaking awesome, I can cast punch at people now.

So after I watched Vaati’s video, he has stuff he wrote about things he found when he played the DLC and it seems that giant dark attack the enemies use is the GSD, not confirmed but it was HEAVILY implied. As well the staff is 100% confirmed dark scaling.

I hope GSD has increased velocity w/ less tracking, so you could possibly use SD as a change up and then hit them with a Fast ball. And here’s hoping the Murky Longstaff is the thing that Yoel carries and has legit spell buff for dark sorcery. I could go for Soul Beads too, call it Dreg Spray maybe. Oh, and Scraps of Life…

  10. I wonder if the aquamarine dagger is our, “lightsaber,” and it is a dagger that transforms into a straight sword?

Also Great Soul Dregs is am calling now to be the CSS equivalent.

I also hope we can get the equipment that knight is using. It looks badass AF. More non-spell tools for casters is what I am looking for.

  11. Dang, magic users look like they’re getting some serious business this time around. Special emphasis on pyromancy and dark sorcery, and that’s only in the first half of the DLC.

  12. >

By the sound of it, that demon bat boss will have 2 things my pyro will absoluetly love. I guess I’ll be running through the game twice to get them

  13. I caved and read notes…SNAP CRACKLE POP! Pyromancers about to get some wondrous toys! And that’s just a few of the items from the first area? Wonder what will be found in the Ringed City…

  14. I just read Vaati’s Notes so I am going to post in spoilers some speculations I have.

First and foremost it looks like the Angels are ascended Pilgrims.

Second it seems Lothric made a journey to the Ringed City.

Rap might be Pate, since we already have Patches, and his helpfulness would be reminiscent of such. It would also fill a duality with Creighton in the Game.

The Bat Demon fight which also has the Demon Below. reminds me of the Old Iron King and I wonder if this Demon Prince that Lorian and Lothric failed to kill might have been the Chaos/Demon that possessed the Iron King.

Loving the ties to DS2, with Mytha, Earthen Peak and the Desert Sorceresses.

I did read the notes. very rich with detail on item descriptions and other cool stuff. very spoiler heavy. and this was only to the first boss. I’m legit hyped to play a souls game again.

  16. >

Oh, that’s hilarious. Other people were having trouble with the boss, but Vaati actually left the DLC to respec and fix the playable character’s stats. Love it.

Alright, I’m gonna go through his other notes and see what’s up.

, should I put any new stuff here in this thread or in the one I made?

  17. One addition, the Dark Sign Knight’s small fire breathing shield, looks like a baby dragon skull. Right? Oh snap Vaati just posted a vidya with much more info…

    [BBvideo 560,315]https://youtu.be/Ifhy9pp1pAw[/BBvideo]

Bat Demon is actually the Demon Prince that was supposedly slain by Lorian.

    Earthen Peak location confirmed.

Multiple entry points to DLC, confirmed.

I didn’t read Vaati’s notes below video, but he says he listed a bunch of spoiler material in them. I chose to stay away.

  18. Okay, let’s see here…

(All names unofficial, I don’t know the real names)
“Dreglings”: Humanoid ghost things with deep colorings. Looks like two different types, a melee with shotel that pops up close to you with a nasty grab attack trying to pull you under, and a caster that fires Deep Souls at range and shapeshifts into a giant dark apparition for a kamikazee rush. Their presence possibly implies the “Dreg Heap” or whatever it’s called from the screenshot has connections to the Deep?

“Angel”: Materializes from above in a pillar of light, then begins firing light rays from its wings at the player that resemble Prince Lothric’s spells. Appears to quickly lose sight of the player if they hide behind a wall, then begins firing again when they’re visible. May inhabit the “Dreg Heap”, assuming it isn’t extremely mobile and just able to travel freely throughout the DLC. Behaves like a preview encounter with a boss, like Sinh from Dark Souls 2 or the greatwolf in Ashes of Ariandel. Not a confirmed boss.

“Darksign Knight”: Heavily armored enemy knight, equipment looks like someone crossed Darkwraith gear with Stone Dragon aesthetics. Has a prominent Darksign on its chest. Weapons appear to be a large straight sword and a small shield that breathes fire. Straight sword seems to have its own weapon art, when the knight puts its shield away to two-hand the sword. Appears to stagger easily from Gundyr’s Halberd’s charge attack.

“Ringed City Giant”: A giant visible in the background at 2:18. Looks to be the one who summoned all the phantom archers.

“Phantom Archers”: A full platoon of ghostly orange archers. They seem to behave like stationary turrets, and are all using the Rapid Fire weapon art found on the Shortbow. Except, they’re using it kind of slowly.

“Bat-Wing Demon”: Freaking huge version of the bat demons from Dark Souls 1’s Anor Londo, except made of lava. Fighting style seems vaguely similar to Flamelurker’s from Demon’s Souls with a side order of the pilgrim butterflies from the Dark Souls 3 Dragonslayer Armor fight. A shadow copy of the boss periodically materializes to launch what appears to be a trail of dark explosions towards the player.

  19. Noone thought of the darklurker yet? That one had a body double (like suly btw) and a dark laser attack.
