Code Vein Gameplay Video Footage Released, Shows Dark Souls Inspired Basic Attacks

At the Anime Expo 2017, Bandai Namco shared some new Code Vein gameplay footage, which is the upcoming Action RPG from the God Eater team. Check it out below.

As you can see in the footage, despite the distinctly more animation style graphics, the basic weapon attacks bear a resemblance to the Dark Souls series of games. There’s a heft to it all, and the timing and spacing all seem to take cues from the patient combat Souls fans have come to know.

In Code Vein you play as vampires on the side of good in a post-apocalyptic dystopia, charged with vanquishing fiends who have give in fully to their bloodlust. It is set to release in 2018 for the PS4, Xbox One and PC. Thoughts on the Code Vein gameplay? Let us know what you think in the comments.

  1. I am curious to see what this game turns out to be. I will just patiently wait for people to test it out before buying though coz past the kinda flashy anime style, it looks pretty generic.
    wait and see.

  2. Whatever the end result is, they are certainly doing their best to make it seem as dark-soulsy as possible! I’m interested, since I like both genres, but we’d have to see if there are online mechanics and whether it’s all about weapon upgrades, how magic works, if there are skills, etc before deciding just how similar to souls it is or not.

This may sound geeky, but I love me some dark edgy anime. The theme of this game reminds me of Seraph of the End.

  4. The way I see it is that Dark Souls’ attacks use stamina per swing, there’s a heavy attack and a light attack, and each attack is largely independent with little in the way of combos.

God Eater’s attacks don’t use stamina per swing (there’s some exceptions), you have a basic attack string and an alternate attack string and you can switch between the two mid string, and every weapon has a special thing that it does that can be combo-ed into your normal attacks.

I just see a dude swinging a sword and an axe. So I’m not saying this is like Dark Souls or God Eater until I see more. AndOMGdoIwanttoseemoreaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh!!!!

  5. I’d put this closer to Soul Sacrifice with weapons than Dark Souls or Bloodborne. Very much so.

  6. seems like some weapons can stagger and others can’t rather than the invisible stagger bar the souls games use.

  7. Fromsoft better come out with a new game quick. Other companies are starting to steal their thunder. First Nioh, now this, and it’s anime! Dark Souls gameplay with anime themes, like a match made in hardcore gamer weeboo heaven.

Although, this also reminds me of Darksiders too. Like that game too.
